How will Gibbs' "relaxed" offseason policy affect the team?
 

Just wondering what your guys' thoughts are on this. The opinion from the players seems to be they really enjoyed the opportunity to get away and do their own thing this offseason.

Some player quotes:

[B]Jon Jansen[/B]: "I was home the whole time, and I feel great, too," Jansen said. "If I'm here, it's 4-5 hours. If I'm home, it's an hour and a half, and I'm done. Then the rest of the time I'm with my daughters and my wife. It's what the offseason should be."

"I've always been excited to come back in and get ready for football," Jansen said, "but you feel so much more refreshed, a little more excited because I haven't seen the guys and haven't done the football thing in a while. I feel fresh."


[B]Santana Moss[/B]:
"It's good to get away," receiver Santana Moss said. "I go home and I try not to see anything about football."

[B]Clinton Portis[/B]:
"I actually think I'm doing more this offseason than I ever did, with my strength and getting back in shape and conditioning and my body," Portis said.

[B]Phillip Daniels[/B]:
"I feel like I'm getting back to that form, working out every day and doing the things I can to try to help this team win a Super Bowl," Daniels said.

It's also worth noting that a good majority of the team (60-75%) stayed in the area and worked out at Redskins Park over the past few months.

So what do you guys think? Will this impact the team in a positive way this season? Was it a good call by Gibbs to loosen up a bit?

If you treat people like adults the hope is that they will act like adults. Only time will tell really.

I think the real question is, is it "affect" or "effect"

I don't think it matters one bit. Work them out at Redskins park, work them out at home, whatever.

Our offensive line worked out at Redskin park last year and had a great season. So did Ladell Betts. Chris Cooley worked out at Redskin park and he had a fine year. If Daniels and Salave'a and Griffin were hurt last year, I don't think the workout regimen was to blame; they simply got hurt. That's all there is to it. I guess maybe there could be a placebo effect; if the players feel more comfortable and more fresh, they maybe it'll translate into a better attitude.

But whatever. Our season rides on GW producing a better scheme, and whether or not JC makes the leap. It's just we don't really get to see those two things taking hold until preseason games come, and until then, we need something to talk about.

The workouts mean jack, IMO.

Wouldn't you know I struggled with that very question, I even tried looking up some explanations of effect vs. affect and the explanations left me even more confused.

Did I get it right here?? Effect is supposed to be used as a verb, no?

Right now it seems like its had a positive effect on guys attitudes. So we'll see if that positive effect translates on the playing field.

Like SS said, only time will tell. These guys got what they wanted, and now its on them to come out and perform.

Just curious, why is or better yet, what is it within the scheme that you feel lacked or GW should address that he didn't last year.

I think it's interesting that the majority of the team still chose to work out at Redskins Park. Looks like the guys that chose to stay home were the Miami guys, no big surprise there, and a few vets like Jansen and Daniels.

If this policy keeps a handful of key guys happy, I think it was a good choice.

I think the bigger part of this is moving up the start of training camp, and having a more intense camp as a result. I'm sure the coaches made it clear that if they let these guys do their own thing in the offseason, they sure as hell better be ready to work their asses off in July and August.

Effect is a noun, Affect is a verb.

I've always used the 'bring about' test, I thought it worked here but then again I always hated grammar for this very reason. Too many rules, LOL

Yeah, I don't see how the move can hurt, really. And it keeps some guys happier, so they'll appreciate Gibbs more. Which may help team chemistry and stuff.

But in the end, I think there are other factors that are going to have a much bigger impact on our 2007 performance.

Well he's already kind of addressed some of the changes he intends to make, which sound intriguing. For one, he's going to keep Taylor deep as a traditional free safety most of the time.

Gibbs also mentioned rushing Marcus Washington as a down lineman more often in pass-rushing situations. Anything to get more pressure on the QB.

Some excerpts from an acrticle in the Examiner today. I like the one where they say that Williams pretty much apologized for last year. Really looking forward to how the defense looks with the "new" aggressive attack.
