Host the Big Game???
How far of a stretch would it be for the Skins to host a Super Bowl? I've never been to the stadium before, and don't know the capacity but I think that would be sweet. Someone please enlighten me.

Re: Host the Big Game???
Capacity isn't the issue, we have the largest stadium in the NFL. It's the cold weather climate - the NFL sticks to venues in warm-weather areas like San Diego or Miami or domed stadiums like the Metrodome and Superdome.

Re: Host the Big Game???
This comes up about every year. Snyder has pushed for it but I believe the NFL is looking for something in a warmer climate. Would hate for all those corp. sponsors to have and sit out in the snow.

Winter in the northeast = no outdoor Super Bowl

Re: Host the Big Game???
The funny thing is that the weather in DC was probably nicer than it was in Jacksonville and even Miami for SB's XXXIV and XLI (XL was in a dome) during the weekend of the game.

I say screw that, football is a cold weather sport, this is what I get down on about the game. The Super Bowl is all about corp. sponsors it is total BS. I agree with moving the site from year to year but if it falls in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, FedEx Field, or anywhere in the northeast then so what, ITS FREAKIN FOOTBALL... |
Re: Host the Big Game???
Wouldnt it be awsome to see a Superbowl in the freezing cold or snow.

The big D-bags will host the Super Bowl in 2011. God, it would be SO awesome to win another one in their building.

Re: Host the Big Game???
I think that's wrong on the part of the NFL. If each NFL has to fight each year, they should have a shot at giving thier fans a chance to watch the Super Bowl at home, at least once in thier lifetime. If I could afford a ticket to the game, then I have to pay to fly, stay in Hotels etc. This just might be the only time I've really aggreed with Danny Boy.

Re: Host the Big Game???
i am friends with a guy that works for fox sports. he says dc will never have a super bowl because of TV stands(?) not enough for the amount of TV cameras the super bowl uses. that and the weather thing

Re: Host the Big Game???
I certainly hope if we never host a Superbowl....it has nothing to do with TV stands? Are you kidding

Re: Host the Big Game???
Anyone remember the rumor going around last year after the NFL meetings that Snyder was looking into an inflatable dome that could be put in place for the Super Bowl to be held in DC? I think it was actually a true story but the cost and logistics made in far too unfeasible.

Re: Host the Big Game???
The owners had this out a few years ago and after he was voted down, Snyder stormed out of the meeting. It is not likely to ever happen and only partly because of the weather.

Re: Host the Big Game???
When JKC got the approvals to build what is now Fed Ex Field, he signed a longterm lease to play in PG County. I was told a couple of years ago that the lease is very restrictive and punitive if the Skins try to play elsewhere.
That means Danny Boy - as the owner of the stadium - would have to find a way to put a roof on it or build a totally new one in PG County for the owners to consider putting a Super Bowl here in DC. And just because a team hosts the game does not mean its fans get tix. In Miami last year, the host Dolphins got less than 3,000 tix to distribute. After they gave a bunch to their local sponsors and "corporate partners", the season ticket holders were in a lottery to share about 1100 tix. One idea the league ought to consider is to play the game every year in the Rose Bowl. The reason is not the huge size of the stadium; the reason is that it is a neutral site and playing there assures that no team will ever have a "home game" in a Super Bowl. Of course, they could also achieve that end by playing in Detroit every year... :) |
Re: Host the Big Game???
Realistically... if any cold weather city was going ot get a Super Bowl.. it would be New York.
