PC troubleshooting help needed
 

Hey guys, just decided to upgrade my pc. I bought a new processor (Athlon X2 2.3 GHz), CoolMax 550 Watt power supply, eVGA 7600GT 256 MB video card, 2GB G.Skill RAM and a Western Digital 160GB SATA HD.

I hooked everything up trying to pay strict attention to compatibility issues (none found) and rechecking all of my cables. Here's the problem: On power up, the power supply fan and the cpu fan start but then immediately die after maybe 3-5 seconds. No power indications after that except for the motherboard LED. The power supply is set to 115VAC, by the way.

Any thoughts or suggestions before I swap parts, probably power supply first?

I had that happen in one of my first builds I hooked the Bios speaker backwards and it was triggering a power shutoff, probably not yours but that was my issue

Also, check your motherboard for popped capacitors. We have Dells at work that are notorious for having a bad capacitor problem. It'll cause all sorts of bad news. Just look at the capacitors on the motherboard, then see if they're "popped" up rather then the tops being flat.

It also sounds like overheating problems too. Did you apply thermal paste to the heatsink between it and the CPU?

I bought a new power supply. Problem follows.

I had already bought some Arctic Silver thermal paste but the Athlon processor and stock fan had some pre-applied thermal paste, which if removed voids the warranty.

I guess I'll send the motherboard back to Newegg first, then the cpu/fan.

Checked the caps along with the rest of the components on the mb. Everything looks good. I used to repair electronics so I think I have a pretty good eye. Sending the board back. Still haven't ruled out the cpu/fan but crossing my fingers that that's not the problem.
