WR McCardell considering signing with Redskins, Texans
Free agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell, the No. 9 pass-catcher in NFL history, may decide to finish his career with the franchise that originally brought him into the league.

Released by the San Diego Chargers earlier this spring, McCardell is also discussing a contract with the Houston Texans, where he visited club officials and coaches three weeks ago. There had been some uncertainty over whether McCardell, 37, wanted to continue his career in 2007. It seems, however, that McCardell has decided to return for this season, and now will determine where he will play. Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
This would be a good thing. He is a cagey vet and a great route runner. He's a zone beater. I hope this pans out.

I'm torn on this one. I'm a big McCardell fan, but I might have preferred him 2-3 years ago. Who goes then? Thrash or Espy?

Tough call. Espy's father worked for Clinton which is a mark against him. But seriously, James would really be on the bubble. Gibbs loves him to death, though Or they could get rid of Brandon "Please Don't Hit Me" Lloyd. Let's see: Moss, Randle-El, LLoyd, McCardell, Espy. Who am I forgetting? They could keep Thrash as 6th on the special teams rationale. |

Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
I like McCardell, and I think he is under-appreciated almost everywhere he goes. I lived in Tampa, and he was pretty much the best receiver on the team when they let him go. Nobody in Tampa seemed to care. Now the same thing basically happened in San Diego.
He definitely knows how to get open, and he actually has great hands. I would like to have him, but only for vet. min. -- which probably won't happen if there are other teams interested. We just have too many receivers as it is. |
Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
Yes, this is a tough one. I don't think we would let thrash go, it would proubally be Espy....? I like McCardell a good vet that would be nice to have, if he has any gas left in the tank.
I think Espy has a strong upside, he just needs a chance, and had a really strong showing at mini-camp he was in the top four list of best camp players, he just needs a chance to prove himself in a real game. I guess if I had to pick it would be the proven vet IF HE CAN STILL PLAY, with a year, but not so sure. This is a tough call! |
Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
McCardell is older than dirt...and one of my sources tells me McCardell was alive during the Adam and Eve era. I would give him a call if someone on the current roster is injured though.

Another washed up veteran looking to get paid. Will the Skins ever learn their lesson? He was a great receiver, just like Keyshawn. The important word is was. I do think he might add depth, but for crying out loud how many more old vets can we pay out? I say keep Thrash and use him more, and that means use him on more plays than just running plays. With Moss, Lloyd, Randle El, and Thrash the Skins have plenty of WR talent to get it done.

The more I think about it, as much as I like him I'd prefer we stick with the guys we've got.

Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
I wouldn't mind him in the #3/#4 role.

Other than Cooley what big redzone target do we have? I think he would complement our existing core quite well. |
Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
Let's look at our WR situation realistically. Outside of Moss we don't have a guy that is a consistent player.
Lloyd was a ghost last year and is a complete unknown coming into this year. He could either get his head on straight and produce or he could pout his way to the bench very quickly. Randle El is a solid #3, but as a #2 he doesn't scare anyone. Thrash is a solid vet but again, he doesn't scare anyone and he's a #3 at best, probably closer to a #4 at this point in his career. The reality of this is McCardell could step in and immediately be a very solid #3 guy and possibly a #2 if needed, a consistent vet who knows how to get open, knows how to play the game and can still play. Just 2 years ago he had 70 catches and 9 TDs for San Diego. I wouldn't be against this move at all, I think he could be had for a reasonable price too. |
Re: WR McCardell considering return to NFL with Redskins, Texans
I'd like to see particularly how Lloyd and Espy do this summer. I have high hopes for both, particularly Lloyd. And while KM can be an instant contributor perhaps, I'd rather see Campbell develop a chemistry that could last several years with guys like Lloyd.
I like McCardell a lot, but big picture I don't know that he's the best fit here. |

He would not require a big payout. If he can still play, I would not be opposed to bringing him back for the year. I think your dead on about Lloyd could go either way, I do hope this is his year to redeem himself? But that's anyone's guess at this point, I was hoping we dumped his ass right along with ARCH. But Thrash isn't a #2 or #3 at WR, but great all around teams/ depth player that we should keep. |
