A regular look at 30 people who will affect the 2007 NFL season. After being one of the league's best defenses in 2005, the Redskins plummeted to 32nd last year. The club also ranked dead last in pass defense, but that was partly due to an inadequate pass rush. Injuries, old age and a stubborn assistant head coach - defense all conspired against the 'Skins in '06, but heading into the draft it was clear what needed to be done: Washington had to draft a defensive lineman, preferably a bad-ass pass rusher. Because Dan Snyder is ... well, Dan Snyder, the team drafted safety LaRon Landry with the sixth-overall pick. Head coach Joe Gibbs even declared that the defensive line was in fine shape (which explains why the Redskins didn't take one with any of their five draft picks). Without reading the article yet, did anyone else notice that both Golston and Montgomery are heavier this year.

Yes, I read that both bulked up significantly

Golston needed some beef, he was about 290 last year, but I thought Montgomery slimmed down a bit? Or maybe he just added muscle and toned up.

According to Redskins.com (at link below) Golston gained a whopping 25 pounds and Montgomery picked up 10. Montgomery was already beefy to begin with. This means both should be weighing in around 315 pounds. Which makes me feel warm and fuzzy. My number one concern with our defense is stopping the run up the middle. Golston seems to have the frame to handle the weight, and let's face it speed wasn't his game anyway. All these guys need to do is control the line of scrimmage and not get shoved around, and let the LBs fly in and do their jobs. |

London is going to need to be free and clear to make contact with the rb, not the guard. At his age, it's harder to separate from a big blocker. We needed more bulk to hinder that second tier blocking.

I am confused by that. But, I am glad that both Golston and Montgomery have bulked up. We need them to clog up that line and take on blocks so Fletcher doesnt end up like Marshall last year. If we can get them to play well along with a healthy Griffin and Salave'a our run defense should jump up to the top 15 again. |

I know this was for Schneed, but I don't see any of our defensive lineman getting cut, we need the depth. Our rotation is important. Plus big Joe can still give us some huge snaps off the bench and be a big part of our rotation. |
Re: NFL 30 To Watch: Kedric Golston, Defensive Tackle, Washington Redskins
Why would we do that? It's our policy to rotate the sub-par defensive line so that atleast they have some energy as the game progresses.

Re: NFL 30 To Watch: Kedric Golston, Defensive Tackle, Washington Redskins
Before the draft I was thinking that JOe S. would get cut, but we didn't bring in any competition from the draft & I don't recall any DT's we got as undrafted fa's.
His roster spot may be a competition between he & Boschetti. |
