About to buy a laptop

I need another one for my school because the last one is dead. I dont want to spend much, but I want a smaller laptop with 1gb ram and atleast 100G hardrive. DVD burner would be needed as well. What do you guys think a good price for this is?

I am looking online, because stores charge way too much and I dont really want to deal with all those mail in rebates. Any good sites out there?

Re: About to buy a laptop

100GB in a laptop hard drive is quite a bit. Honestly, I'd try and find a used Dell Latitude (D600 or above) and upgrade it myself. If you get a 60GB drive, get an additional external to go with it. If you're like most people, all that space is to save music and movies anyway, and I'd much rather trust a full-sized external than a laptop drive.

You can get good prices on those used Dells and can upgrade them as much as you want.

Solid advice. A used/refurbished Dell D610 , or better yet a D620, should last you a good 3-4 year.

Honestly, you can get a brand new Dell Inspiron with exactly what you need for under $700. I doubt you'd really get a great deal on a used laptop. I've worked on both Inspirons and Latitudes and don't really see much of a difference in performance. I guess it really has to do with what you're going to be doing on the computer.

Re: About to buy a laptop

newegg.com - look at everex (i got one) - 15" intel duo for 550 (1gb, 80gb, dvd-rw) - won't do games, will do just about everything else though.

amd 64 x2 17" 1gb, 100gb, dvd-rw, geforce 7600 (good enough for new games) for 750$ (screens are great, battery life on a 17" is never going to be too amazing though). I've had mine for about 3 months and i have no complaints.

otherwise, techbargains.com for dell coupons and dell.com w/ said coupon for a really good deal.

used laptops + upgrades usually aren't the best deal now... especially if you have to waste time tracking down a new battery cause the old one finally died.

No one ever got fired for picking Dell. Cheap, fast, and the best bang for the buck.

True, Dell is becoming the new Cisco.

Can't go wrong with Dell Refurb or Brand New. Their run of the mill laptops have gotten very reasonable, to the point where I may buy one here soon.

My family bought my parents' Godson a Inspiron 1501 for a graduation present and he loves it. And the 1501 will be a bit cheaper because it's AMD instead of Intel. I think we spent 1100 on it, but I went and upgraded a bunch of stuff (memory, bigger hard drive, better battery, upgraded video, Office, etc)

See how much it would be to jump the memory to 2GB...that's one of those things where you can't have too much.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I was looking at Dells through deal sites but I was not too sure about their used products. Another problem for me is I would prefer a smaller laptop, with a smaller screen because I had a 15+ inch one and it was too bulky and annoying to take everywhere.

Re: About to buy a laptop

Here at my office, there are a lot of D420s (12.1" notebook) and D520s (14.1" notebooks) around and they seem to be popular as a great lightweight PC. The problem is the smaller you go, the more expensive they will be. Dell Outlet has one D520 with 1 GB of memory for $750.

My work laptop is a D810, and I love it. It's 15.4", but it's really not bad. I'm able to tote it to and from work with no problems. However, I could see wanting something smaller...

We have those here too and I'll tell you the problem with those is that they don't have optical drives built-in. Basically you have to have an external optical drive or a dock.

Well that's a bitch..hmm I might have to reconsider going small(please refrain from the phallic jokes).

Re: About to buy a laptop

I mean you CAN get the little add-on piece that mounts to the laptop, but all that does it make the weight the same as the higher weight models.
