I notice on each persons post now to the left is a Scales symbol. What does this populate?

I think it's a way to give feedback on each post, and it adds to an overall "reputation" on the site. Probably a good way to cut back on junk posts.

Seriously though, this is just something to experiment around with. Whether it will help improve the quality of posts around here is set to be seen.
