Jon Jansen: Starter Next Year?

I think this is a valid argument. Some would like to see the Redskins move in another direction and draft or possibly acquire another starting tackle, but I think Jon Jansen still has a future with this team. Perhaps as a starter, and baring a set back with his recovery I think you can expect to see him in training camp again next year.

One thing's for sure, Todd Wade can't stay healthy, and when he is he hasn't shown me anything to lead me to believe he's the answer. The guy just isn't better than Jansen, in my opinion. I also think Wade lacks that something "toughness and grit" that Jansen possess.

Stephon Heyer? He should be on this team next year for sure. But again, I'm not sold he's ready to hold it down for sixteen games. If anything these last three games will be an auditioning of sorts for him going into next year.

But if I were a betting man, I would say look forward to seeing good old #76 next year.

Poor Jansen has had some freaky injuries. All offensive linemen have that posibility of having another guy roll into their legs which makes luck such a big part of injuries to O-line and D-line. I think Jansen is still a great RT, he has just has some really bad luck.
I hope he comes back as the starter, but this year is proof that we need some serious quality behind those guys. O-line play is HUGE!!!! in determining the team's sucess.

Hayer and Wade are both better than Jansen. He was a solid player 4 years ago but he was really declined these last couple of years. I was watching him very closely this preseason and he couldn't block anybody. Gibbs covered him up by always keeping the tight end in. But we all know you can't have a good offense when you keep everyone in to block and don't send any people out in routes. We need to draft a RT and a guard.

I would not count on Jansen. Love the guy but let's be realistic. He's always hurt. I think it would be overly reactionary to go for yet another safety in the draft. We do need to replace Taylor but I rank D-line and O-line as being higher on our list of priorities. Just my two cents.

I think your watching the wrong person he wears #76.

I honestly would like to go in another direction. I mean, I like him, Wade and Heyer holding it down, but we really need to draft some blue chip talent in the draft. I'm fine with developing Heyer since he's young and is improving, but we need someone who can step in and start right away.

If Jansen is healthy he's the starter no question.

I don't understand why this is even an argument? Jon Jansen is clearly a strong starter in this league, I don't think a broken ankle changes that.

I think the big question or rather concern with his ankle is whether there's any ligament damage. I haven't heard one way or another.

But I would think even if we acquired another tackle to compete with Jansen, he'd better come with game because Jansen is going to be fired up next season.

Jansen is a slightly above average RT who is probably on the downside of his career. But he's the best option we have so he should be the starter. But Heyer should be groomed to take over in two or three years. I would get rid of Wade all together. He gets hurt walking from the huddle to the line of scrimmage.

Schneed - also I would think Salary cap constraints also force the issue. The Skins can't just cut everyone (and I would think Llyod and Philip Daniels are both gone among others) so just from a cap management perspective cutting Jansen is not really an option - correct?

Correct. Cutting him would hit us with $2 million more on our cap than if we kept him around.

I think if anything though, people are arguing that maybe he should be a backup and we should get a younger stud in there. I like him as a starter, personally. The team has much bigger problems than Jon Jansen.

If anyone's thinking cut the guy, it makes no sense from a cap standpoint.

Jon Jansen was getting beat like a redheaded stepchild in preseason and the season before he got hurt. Hate to say it, but had he been the only injury along the O-line I feel like it improved our line more than hurt it.

Jansen had been great for us in the past, but injuries have caught up to him.

I agree that his pass protection slipped some, but not worse than Heyer and Wade are performing this year.

Plus Jansen is still a very strong run blocker.

I agree w/that 100%. JJ has looked solid in run blocking the past couple years, but is starting to get beat more in pass pro.

Heyer seems more adept at pass blocking than run. He's got to get stronger to be a starter all year.

I see Jansen as the starter, but we all agree that the team needs some youth on the o line & if a young stud can take his spot so be it. I actually thought Jansen would've made a better LG prospect than Wade, and maybe he could still make the switch as I think he's a pretty good pull/sweep blocker.

If Jansen is healthy & is not our starter in week 1 of 08, I'd say our depth is looking up.
