Sean Taylor's contract
 

I hate to think in these terms..

I know that Casserly had said that the Redskins will not get any immediate cap relief from the Sean Taylor tragedy..but when can they officailly release him? Would they have to technically IR him for his roster spot until the release is finacially plausible?

Taylor signed a 7 yr deal in 2004 and is eligible for free agency in 2011.

Contract Information for Sean Taylor
8/27/2004: Signed a seven-year, $18 million contract. The deal included a $7.2 million signing bonus and contains $13.1 million in total guarantees. Another $22 million is available in escalators based on playing time, performance and Pro Bowl or All-Pro selections. 2007: $1.125 million, 2008$865,000, 2009: $1.105 million, 2010: $1.345 million (Voidable Year), 2011: Free Ag

Does anybody understand the cap penalities in more deatail? It appears that after they paid his signing bonus most of his money would have come through incentives..I hope that the team can release him and not get hurt in the cap, the organization has gone through enough.

I think they'll take a normal hit just as if they cut him which will probably be in the neighborhood of $4M.

I don't understand why they would have to cut him. He died. Wouldn't that just completely take him off the books without a cap penalty?

This is my thought exactly. If he no longer exists, why does his contract? This doesn't make any sense.

My thought as well, although entirely too early to talk about it. Not a resolvable issue until next year during FA when we will hear more about it.

What happens to a big contract if a player decided to just retire? I am thinking about guys like Barry Sanders who just said "I've had enough". Couldn't Sean Taylor just "Retire" and the Skins get relief that way?

The evil in me assumes it's because it would prevent owners from having thoughts of killing off players "accidentally" to avoid paying them when they no longer have value. Again, I seriously doubt that's the reason. I just have a dark side when it comes to bidness.

Barry voluntarily broke his contractual obligation so the Lions didn't lose any money after he retired. I can't remember if he gave back any portion of his signing bonus but I remember that being an issue.

I may be wrong but I thought that the signing bonus still counted in a retirement year. If this isn't the case, why not sign MB to a 20 year contract for league minimum every year and a signing bonus for what he would make next year. Then he retires and we only are charged with 1/20th of what we paid. He gets money and we get relief.

Well, Sean Involuntarily broke his contract and no one is to blame, so it seems to me like the league could rule that his contract no longer exists and therefore there would be no penalty going forward. I guess I view it all from a fairness issue and allowing the Skins the cap room for the future just seems to be the fair thing to do. But what do I know!

This happened with deion sanders while he was here also. We had to take the hit anyways. Unfair yes but that is the way it worked out.

With Sean though I think it is a completely different issue.

A contract is void in case of death. that is law. There is no reason for us to keep paying someone who is deceased.

Ahh....but if the Redskins don't get any cap help, couldn't someone (owner, stakeholder, or eccentric fan) conceivably develop the opposite tactic: killing another teams star player as a double-wammy, they lose the player and the caproom?

Sorry guys, but from what I googled on past situations, there is no cap relief for players that have died...specifically korey stringer.
I'm not 100% sure but about 85% sure.

If the new commissioner decides otherwise, it would be his prerogitive.

Nah, any leader knows that that tactic would only work if you're looking for a swift victory; otherwise you're going to lose players as well. It's sort of like the Revolutionary War days (and before) when you weren't supposed to hit the guy on the horse.

Ok, I'm through with this line of thinking, especially considering the situation. Sorry for irritating anyone.
