Did anyone else notice the really deep drops that the QBs were taking in Monday's game? It seemed that every passing play, the QBs were taking 9 step drops or rolling out for a bootleg.

I guess this is part of the maximum protection scheme.

No, but I did notice how long Brunell, especially, was taking to hike the ball. I wonder what was up with that?

I think it is part of the scheme. I remember Doug Williams used to drop back pretty deep and Rypien would do the same thing with the little "roll - out" to give him more time to throw. If you notice the WR's run a deep route then they do a curl/comeback. That takes time and with the max protection and deep drops that allows the receivers to do that. I might be wrong, but I believe that's part of the scheme. Someone correct me if I am.

You're right, he was taking a long time. I know Brunell has been in the league for a while, but he only played three games last year. Maybe he was just getting comfortable again.

The reason for the deep drops (7 steps) is that we were sealing off the outside with extra blockers. If you noticed our H-back and Rb would never line up directly behind the quaterback in ovious passsing plays. That basically takes away a speed rusher coming off the edge, can make d-linemen bull rush. Ovouisly if the quater back is further back you have to bull rush a greater distance and takes more time to get to the qb.

Besides, it now gives some of you Madden guys justification to drop back 94 yards before throwing the ball. You can say, "It's realistic. Brunell does it!" :laughing-

That's because Spurrier thought his [i]college[/i] blocking schemes would somehow magically work in the NFL. Imagine going two seasons with that mentality! (I've never liked Spurrier, but tried my very best to like him while he coached my Redskins. Now that he's gone, I can get back to disliking him like a good Florida State Seminole fan should.) :silly:

Yes but like I said Spurrier wasn't sealing off the outside. In general teams these days use 5 step drops more that anything. If Gibbs is gonna make the QB take a 7 step drop, then he's gonna make sure he's got the outside sealed of or gives a little play action. I heard an interview with Buges awile back say they will mostly be using 5 step drops. But in general these are the datails that Spurrier overlooked and Gibbs pays close attention too.

Actually, I think that's a Gibbs thing. I remember he was always big on using the whole play clock to slow the game down and help to keep the opposing offense off the field and rest his defense as much as possible. He was always excellent at clock/game management.

Of course, he also will throw the no-huddle at you too.

I will say this about the game... I actually got the chills the first play we were on offense. Watching the mutiple motions starting with the H-back and the nice tight formation with one receiver split and one tailback really brought back some great memories.

No offense to Daseal, but to me, [i]this[/i] is real Redskins football.

Yeah I had alot of fun watching the offense too, even though it was pretty watered down. The basics were there though, the QB rollouts, the counters, the motion and the emphasis on protection from the h-backs. Good stuff!
