Philip Rivers?
 

I was wondering what will happen to Rivers if the Chargers do not sign him at all this season?

How long do they have "rights" to him? Will he be able to go somewhere else next year if he wants to? Or will he be included in the draft again for a team to draft?

I'm pretty sure he's eligible to be drafted again. I was looking through hailredskins.com and noticed that we drafted the same player twice. Sammy Baugh I believe.

Anyone blame Manning now? =p

Well thats good if he can be drafted again, but what happens when the Chargers have the 1st overall pick again next year?

It's extremely unlikely this will go clear through the season. But if it does, yes, he is again thrown into the draft pool. If it starts to look like that would happen, SD would probably trade his rights during the season.

Rivers is not about to give up a year of salary. He'd be stupid to do so
There's be no guarantee that he'd be drafted as high as 4 next year.
In fact, if it wasn't for Manning, he wouldn't have been drafted so high this year.

Cal Rossi we drafted twice. Anyone know the story?

He was again voted Honorable Mention All-American and the Washington Redskins of the National Football League drafted him in the first round.

A junior academically, Rossi wasn't eligible for the draft yet and his selection was deemed illegal.

But the Redskins liked Rossi so much, they drafted him No. 1 again in 1947. Rossi was coming off another phenomenal season: he was named Honorable Mention All-American for the third straight year and played in the East-West Shrine game at Stanford.

The Shrine game turned out to be Rossi's last, however. He spurned the NFL for a life in education.

If Rivers does not have a contract within a year, the Chargers' rights to him expire and he becomes eligible for the draft again next year. If you recall, the Texans drafted Drew Henson (even though he said he didn't want to play football) with a later round pick in the 2003 draft. During the offseason, the Texans turned Henson into a 2nd (I think) round pick by trading him to Dallas, where he eventually signed a contract after deciding making $3million a year in the Yankees farm system wasn't something he wanted to do.

Have you guys heard about some of the terms that are apparently in the Chargers' offer?

If Rivers plays in four Super Bowls and appears in four Pro Bowls over his first four years, he gets $5 million. Five Super Bowls and five Pro Bowls in five years. $7.5 million. Six Super Bowls and six Pro Bowls in six years. $10 million

That's just ridiculous....

Oh, and I'm not saying I don't believe you...just that it's so ridiculous that it's unbelievable.
