The Official Donte Stallworth Pure Speculation Thread

If I remember right there is some option in Stallworth's contract that could make him a free agent this year.

If so-considering his age, size, past performance and experience in the West Coast Offense-do you guys think he's someone worth targeting in free agency this offseason?

I don't think we should aggressively pursue him. But I think we should see how the market plays out and wouldn't be opposed if the chips fell in such a way that he was a Redskin in 2008.

He's certainly intriguing. He underperformed in New Orleans and developed a reputation for shying away from contact. He obviously did really well in Philly when he was healthy. If we're looking for a #2, he should definitely be in the discussion. If we're looking for a bona fide #1, I would take a pass.

He's good, but he's basically the same guy we already have in Moss and Randle El. I'd rather have a bigger posession receiver.

I doubt very seriously Moss is getting out of Pats country.

i'm not so sure...the pats aren't known for paying up...that said, I think Randy gives them a home town discount...finish what they started type deal...
didn't the '72 dolphins lost in the superbowl in '71? could get scaring next year for the AFC.

He doesn't really make us any better. Sure we could sign him and end up releasing Mix, but he's going to get PT at the expense of ARE or Moss and that's not really an improvement. Just a costly lateral move.

Yeah I don't see him as more than a #2 really. Back in December I wanted Moss at #1 and Reche at #2 with ARE at 3 (and I guess it wouldn't hurt to get Anthony in the Mix)

With the new offensive philosophy, I wonder if Stallworth is a better fit than Caldwell.

Like I said, I'm not saying let's aggressively pursue him. Far from it (save that for Justin Smith :) ), but as you say, he should probably be in the discussion.

I would have liked to seen Reche a little earlier on I think he would have been the #2, when given the action he was solid, putting ARE at the #3 spot. And yes get Anthony in the Mix....NICE! I would like to see what this kid can bring he has the size, JC spoke highly of him and got him in here. And the kid played GREAT on teams, he might just be the answer?

The Pats signed him to a multi year deal, but it was essentially a one year deal with multiple option years.. He's due something like $8 mil. next year without restructuring..

I don't think he's a fit really.. He's too fragile to be counted on for 16 games (sound familiar) and he doesn't fill our need as a bigger #1 WR..

He is not a #1 WR, and has proven so. So why pursue him at all? Either we go after a #1, (or potential #1 in the draft) or stick with what we have and give Mix a shot.

Does it make sense at this point to nab a receiver if he's not going to be our #1 guy? I think Gtripp raises a good point...

We've got a shmorgusboard of non #1 talent, so I think we stay put there. Unless we don't break the bank, I'm not on the Stallworth bandwagon.

Agreed. We already have an abundance of undersized receivers. Hopefully we'll get another jump ball catching, tall receiver in the draft to help complement Cooley.

I hope we continue the Gibbs way of having good character guys. Randy Moss certainly wouldn't fit the bill in that regard.

I thought a couple years ago in Philly when he was healthy Stallworth proved he could be a #1 WR. I would love to have him or Roy Williams from Detroit if the rumors of him being available are true.

Draft a young kid that is like 6'4 or 6'5" and have Moss and Randle El mentor him.

I agree... Williams looks tempting an IF we can get a good price we should go after him but I cannot see us giving up a 1-3 round draft pick and unfortunately thats what it will take to get him, CJ, or Moss (God forbid). I know this is mere speculation but its gotta be emphasized that we need to build from the draft.

EDIT: we wouldnt have to trade for Moss but he would still be way too expensive

He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints with the 13th pick in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Stallworth caught eight touchdown passes in 2002, his rookie year, but saw less action the next season. As a full time starter in 2004, he had 767 receiving yards and five touchdowns. In 2005, he recorded a career-high 70 receptions for 945 yards with seven touchdowns.
On August 28, 2006, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for linebacker Mark Simoneau and a conditional fourth round pick in the 2007 Draft. The Eagles made the deal for him because they needed a speed receiver to line up at the X in Andy Reid's version of the West Coast Offense. In Stallworth's first game with the Eagles, less than two weeks after the trade, he caught six passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. Due to a nagging hamstring injury, Stallworth missed three games early in the regular season, but finished the year with 725 yards and five touchdowns.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Stallworth was in the league substance abuse program. If we're looking for WR's with experience in the West Coast why not target FA to be D.J. Hackett? He probably will re-sign in Seattle, but Zorn is obviously familiar with him and he did some good things in the Northwest once he got healthy at the end of the year.

Re: The Official Donte Stallworth Pure Speculation Thread

NE is very deep at WR and I'd imagine they can't continue to keep guys like Kelly Washington and Chad Jackson. Maybe we can grab one of those guys. I'd stay away from Stallworth. He pulls his hamstrings all the time.

Re: The Official Donte Stallworth Pure Speculation Thread

he's a good deep threat, but he's built like a tin can.

he'd be a good hire, but only if he's extremely cheap, since he'll only be playing in about 8 games a year.

HOGTIMUS PRIME 02-05-2008 03:28 AM

Re: The Official Donte Stallworth Pure Speculation Thread

Don't know why we would actually target the guy? Or would want him? He's an underachiever, Moss and El are both much better receivers than Stallworth. Our WR's need a QB who can get them the ball, and an offensive line that will allow that to happen.

I guess we still don't understand that we need big, powerful offensive lineman if we are to get better, another WR isn't making a difference, especially if it's Stallworth.

freddyg12 02-05-2008 08:42 AM

Re: The Official Donte Stallworth Pure Speculation Thread

Stallworth has shown that he's got the talent to play well when healthy, mainly as a deep threat. But he's one of those guys that disappears when things aren't going well. you don't see him making the tough catches inside too much.

Not a bad idea to toss out there, but if it came down to stallworth or keeping all the guys we have, I'd opt for the latter simply because he's not enough of an upgrade to offset his price & team chemistry.

With Zorn on board that could be possible. He's very good when healthy.
