Matthias Askew - Good Signing or not? Give your opinion

"He was drafted in the 2004 NFL Draft by Cincinnati after leaving college early to declare for the NFL draft. He was projected by many to be a possible first round pick the following year had he stayed in school.

The Bengals waived Askew during the 2006 pre-season shortly after he was arrested for resisting arrest earlier in the summer. During the arrest he was tasered [1]. Later he had brought suit against the city of Cincinnati, and charges were dropped."

I want to know how come no one ever talks about this guy as someone who is young, and that could possibly help our D-line? sometimes you gotta look at players like this to step up and live up to their expectations, and prove the Bengals they made a mistake in letting him go. I understand there seems to be a character issue when he was in Cinci, but it seems everyone who puts on a Cinci uni ends up in somet kind of contreversy. It sounds to me that organization is just ran by thugs, and they have no control over their players or coaches.

I kinda hope this guy end up being a factor, and maybe if he plays well, we can get something in return for him in a trade, or end up trading someone else that got their spot taken by him.

Let me know what you think about this guy, I dont know much about him.

We cut him too last summer. I can't imagine he'd be anything more than a camp body at DT.

It looks like he's never been really given a chance. It says he was a projectd 1st rounder, and someone with that talent, shouldnt be a camp body IMO.

Especially at 6'5'' 309lbs. Montgomery was a late round pick and has earned a starting spot. This guy could possibly be something good if given the chance.

Its obvious that DT was a need, and they felt that by picking someone up via free agency, with a remnant of potential still left, that it would help the DT rotation and they wouldn't have to draft one early, late, or at all.

Smart Move. I like it, Low Risk with High Reward

And i mean he's still young. He's only 25-26.

I believe they will still look to the draft to pick up a DT or DE, I just don't know what round. But you need depth at them positions. because if one person goes down, it can mess up your whole line. We will have ALOT of picks this year. (9 I think) So look for us to address almost every position. (other than RB,K,P)

At most a rotation guy, but I agree -- probably a camp body.

How is DT a need, when you have 3 quality DT's that showed they could play, and Anthony Montgomery, and Kedric Golston are both just 24, we are set for the future at DT.

I agree... but we do need a 3 technique DT than can be put in their to help collapse the pocket. Monty and Golston are great at stopping the run, but we need to have someone in place behind Griffin,Daniels, and We let go of Wynn b/c of age last year.

We have a great pass rusher in Carter coming off one edge, and we also need to look at gettin a stud opposite carter that's not a prototype of himself.

Plus, if you look at the quality of depth we had last year compared to '06, you understand the importance of have good/young players ready to step in and make plays. Rather than old vets who just get injured themselves. (not talking about all vets)

It's good to put young palyers in and let them get experience. Especially players like Doughty who are great athletes, smart, but just havent had the best coaching throughout his college career. The better coaching he receives, the better player he will become. He will never replace our man ST(RIP) but he can come in and be Reed Doughty, and hopefully create his own hype. I think as long as he continues to work out and learn, the potential for him is crazy. How many players coulda stepped in last year after what happend to ST and played like he did? He didnt try to act like sean taylor and stuff like that. He just played like he knew how, and he came into his own. He got better with evey game, and you cant ask for anything more than that.

Don't need receiver, we have Mix, don't need corner, we have Torrance, don't need MLB, we have Blades, don't need End, we have Buzbee and Wilson...you get the picture.

I think if you count on the combination of Montgomery and Golston to fill one of the DT spots over the next two years, you probably aren't going to be disappointed, but assuming that we can get by with them as a tandem for the next 5 years...be prepared for some bad defense.

Good pick up. It gives us some flexibility in the draft.

We aren't as pressed to get a DT in the early rounds now.

If we get the extra compensatory picks, we will be sitting pretty ( at least personnel wise).
