Veteran offensive lineman Jason Fabini plans to re-sign with Washington, a league source said today, providing depth for the offensive line with right guard Randy Thomas still recovering from triceps surgery. Contract terms were not immediately available.
Fabini filled in well while playing guard for the first time in his career last season, so the Redskins hoped he would return to the team next season. Fabini, a tackle for the first nine years of his 10-year career, was thrust into the starting lineup when Thomas tore his triceps in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
He got off to a rough start (Fabini had consecutive false-start penalties on a key drive late in the first half) in relief of Thomas, but emerged as a key contributor of a makeshift offensive line that helped the Redskins win their last four games in the regular season and earn a playoff berth. Although not as athletic as Thomas, Fabini performed consistently while starting 13 games at right guard, line coach Joe Bugel said during the season. Fabini, who signed with the Redskins after playing for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2006 season, began his NFL career with the New York Jets under former coach Bill Pacells.
Fabini signed with Dallas in part because Parcells was there. With Parcells now the head of football operations for the Miami Dolphins, Fabini was among the free agents the Dolphins considered signing.
Fabini would be the fourth Redskins free agent to re-sign with the team. Backup quarterback Todd Collins, return specialist Rock Cartwright and punter Derrick Frost also have accepted new deals. The Redskins are awaiting a decision from wide receiver Reche Caldwell, who also has been offered a contract. Washington has not signed any free agents from other teams.

Fabini Agrees to Return to Redskins

Offensive lineman Jason Fabini has agreed to terms on a new contract with the Redskins, the team has announced.

Fabini, a 10-year veteran, is expected to provide solid depth at guard and tackle.

Fabini initially joined the Redskins in March 2007 and was expected to serve as a key backup. Instead, he was an invaluable starter at right guard when Randy Thomas and Jon Jansen went down with injuries early in the season.

Fabini ended up playing in all 16 games plus a playoff game. He helped the Redskins to the 12th-ranked rushing offense.

Fabini was a fourth-round draft choice of the New York Jets in 1998. He played nine seasons with the Jets, playing 129 regular-season games with 114 starts.

Fabini played one season for the Dallas Cowboys in 2006, before signing on with the Redskins.

Good to hear, he was solid last year filling in for Randy Thomas, hopefully we can sign Heyer to a long term contract.

Solid move for depth and a spot starter if needed.

Re: Fabini to re-sign.

this is quietly turning into the best off season we've had in awhile. I think we have been getting there the past few years, but glaring disasters (Arch, B Lloyd) have prevented us from remaining turmoil free. If we have a solid draft, and get the last of the free agents (Caldwell) to resign...we'll be set to have a breakout year next season.

That's excellent news and a good depth move. Although, I'd like to see us start to acquire some young pups to push the veterans and who can develop over the next year or two, should we start to lose a vet or two.

Nice to see us keeping folks--quite a change from the usual MO here. Maybe this is Vinny unleashed? Could it be that Gibbs et al were the FA problem and not the infamous whipping boy?

Of course, it's easy to not mess up when you take no risks!

Exactly. Entering the offseason with every starter under contract from a team that made the playoffs is a pretty cushy way to start your tenure as "the" front office head honcho. Not to mention we have a big ole pile of draft picks.

Granted, he could have traded the draft picks to make the proverbial splash, but we didn't have the cap room and he made the smart play of standing pat with a team the fans already love (especially after all they overcame in '07).

Safe and sound. Fine with me. And I'm glad Fabini is back.

I don't agree.

They are taking a risk by not going after any of the significant FA's. You can bet that if the team flops this year someone is going to blast them for sitting on their hands this offseason.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. We're the Redskins. Someone will find a reason to blast us no matter what. Be it Sally Jenkins, Pastabelly, Peter King, or people on this site, someone will be dogging us for something. In this case, I agree with our decision to stand pat. Especially b/c this year's FA market was as weak as we've seen in years and every starter is returning.

I didn't think Fabini did all that well last season. I remember seeing him get bulldozed quite a bit. Sure, he was better than Todd Wade, but that's not saying much.

I agree with you, he did not play well at times last year, especially in the Seattle game.
Calling him a solid back up is stretching it IMO.
He is old. He is an ok back up at guard, but he is not quick enough to be an every day tackle in the NFL. He certainly could not handle a speed rusher at LT.
We need to to develop some young talent.
If we can draft a couple of decent OL we would be better off.
