5. Can Joe Gibbs lead the Redskins to the Super Bowl?

Absolutely. One thing we have learned in the era of the salary cap is that a head coach can be a tremendous tie-breaker. How many times do we have to see it before we believe it? Look at Mike Holmgren in Seattle. The Seahawks have a chance to go to the Super Bowl this year. Dick Vermeil led the Chiefs to a 13-3 record last year. And of course, there is Parcells and what he did in Dallas.

Coaches make a difference.

I put Gibbs in that illustrious class of NFL coaches along with Bill Walsh, Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll and Jimmy Johnson. The critics might say that he's been away from the game too long, but I don't buy that. You don't lose your skills as a football coach. You can either coach or you can't, and Gibbs can coach.

I worked with Joe at NBC and he always had this one saying that I still use today: "If you can protect the quarterback and keep him from getting hit, there are 40 or 50 guys that can play in this league. If you can't keep your quarterback from getting hit, there are only four or five that can play."

That's why he has won a Super Bowl with three different quarterbacks. The year Mark Rypien led the Redskins to the Super Bowl, he was sacked only a handful of times.

With Mark Brunell in Gibbs' quarterback cocoon, I expect big things from him. Remember, the NFC is wide open this year. There is not a dominant team. The Redskins are one of many teams in the NFC that have a legitimate chance to go to the Super Bowl.

I like that quote about 40 or 50 guys playing under protection, thats the biggest thing Gibbs brings to the table. His protection schemes always ensure the quarterback can make the play

The NFL is a coaches league without a doubt.

If Parcells and Vermeil can succeed in "today's NFL", it's silly to think that Gibbs can't as well.

azskinsfan2 08-25-2004 09:20 PM

Without a doubt, Coach Gibbs puts us back in the top ten in the league, (along with all his other old time coaches). Ramsey had no protection at all. With the new "Dirtbags" giving the QB the proper protection and Portis running the ball, who knows where we might end up!!! But it all starts with Joe Gibbs!!!
GGGGGGGOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSKKKKKKKIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly I think year 1 Greg Williams will make a bigger improvement overall. I think our offense will also be better, but we've had so much talent on D underacheiving for so long!

The D only really sucked last year under the Spurrier fiasco. Under Lewis, Shottenhimer & Rhodes the D was respectable.

Understatement!

Definitely an Understatement!

The D under Shotty and Rhodes were still very undisciplined teams. Lewis' was a good defensive team, but I think Williams will bring scheme and discipline together and this unit will be dominating by years end.

This is the first time that I've ever liked something that Chris Collinsworth has said.

Amazing.

My thoughts exactly! I'ts amazing how Gibbs brings instant respect to the Skins, even from the ones that were trashing us the most over the past couple years...

shouldn't amaze you at all. no one can hate the 'Skins that much to deny the coach that Joe Gibbs is.

you all have to admit, ALL those 'Skin dissers in the media were plain RIGHT before now. unlike us, they are paid to be skeptical (not wishful) about unproven hype, and thats all the Skins have been since Gibbs left, hype.

nobody can argue with Gibbs' results from the past, much less try and say he was just blessed with ungodly talent. he certainly wasn't. but he has been out of the game for 12 years, and while these experts are paid to see through any off-field hype, they all recognize Gibbs as the real thing, and can't do anything less than give him the benefit of the doubt.

its not a matter of if now, its just a matter of when. ahh, how good does it feel to have him back??
