Did he already screw up the knee he was supposed to have surgery on and decided not to?

Didn't take long. Weren't people predicting that when the news of his injury came about?

That is amazing. I can't believe he didn't just listen to the doctors in the first place. Maybe he can still salvage a decent career after this.

This has been a crazy start with injuries. Sad to Merriman out for the season, hope he makes a complete recovery

It looks like he's the one that called it. Seems like he attempted to play, and "it didn't feel right". So, in a way he made the call to leave the game, and have the surgery. It's what he should have done a while ago, but I guess he wanted to test it out in a game.
If he would have injured himself worse I would blame the Chargers front office. If I have someone that I know is a game changer, I wouldn't have left it up to him.
