STACY MACK tries out for skins

nothing in writing yet. but im very excited to hear this. ive been reading most of the posts based on who should we keep at back. well, i dont think sultan has enough size to run the ball considerably like gibbs wants. i dont think betts can handle the load (he's always injured), i dont think simon has the size. they are all good complements, yet "what if" portis goes down? who has the durability or size to make gibbs offense work? at 6'1" 240, stacy mack would definately fit joe's system and has the size to be somewhat durable, especially after seeing him in jacksonville those couple of years. he did a great job filling in for injury proan taylor. what do you guys think????

I think Mack would have a great impact on the running game here in DC. He would probably take over as a tough yardage guy and could sub when Portis is tired or injured. I'd take Mack over Betts and McCoullough. Sign him for veteran minimum.

Stacey Mack is a great runner and would fill our backup role immediately. This is great news if its true!

that would be a great move if we could sign him. perfect compliment to Portis. where did you get this information? I cant find anythign on that...

He would fit as the short yardage, goal line back like the role Riggs played. I haven't seen anything official regarding this though.

Great change of pace guy, or I guess I should say change of power. Would def. be a good pick up.

Where did you hear this? I haven't seen anything like this anywhere! As for Mack dose he have anything left? If he is anything like he was a few years back he would fill a need but if he was wouldn't he be playing for someone right now?

If anyone can find a link please post it

I found mention of it in the Times

Washington worked out running back Stacey Mack, who started five games for the Houston Texans last season. Mack's best year came in 2001 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he started 11 games and rushed for 877 yards. No signing was imminent, and the Redskins already have a crowded backfield with Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright, Sultan McCullough and John Simon vying for two roster spots.

Living in Houston I saw Mack play last yr,I'm not impressed,we dont need him, would much rather have Betts or Cartwright

If we were to sign him, I'd say that would mean Rock would be out and we would have a backfield of Portis, Betts, Mack and Morton.

Does anyone else think that Gibbs has something up his sleeve that involves Morton? We've barely seen him play any RB this preseason, I'm thinking Gibbs will find a way to get him in the open field with his quickness and speed.

Now that you mention it, I'll bet Gibbs has been deliberately quiet with Morton. He's been in the backfield on a few plays, but yes, look for much more action with Morton on 3rd down this year. That could be one of the reasons we signed Thrash back -- to take some of the returning duties from Morton who always said he's wanted more action on offense.

Also agree that if Mack signs, that's the writing on the wall for Rock Cartwright. They're not going to give up on Betts just yet. Rock will get picked up elsewhere for sure. John Simon, while making a serious run for the job this preseason is in all likelihood the odd-man out.

you guys remember when Gibbs was having Thrash line up as a fullback then motioning him everywhere in the last game vs. the Rams? well, it was Thrash, a WR, and i doubt he was fooling anybody, but what if it was Morton?

maybe Gibbs plans to use Morton like that, who can obviously run from anywhere, and has also lined up wide and been thrown to as a reciever in the past. would certainly cause disarray in the defense (like it did in the Rams game)....imagine the reverses....

think we just figured out Gibbs's secret gameplan for '04. ssshhh. :cool-smil

memphisskin 08-30-2004 10:25 AM

More plays for Morton? Uh, no. I understand the need to share the load, but Portis is great out of the backfield as well, so Morton would only see time spelling Portis. I think Portis needs to be the primary 3rd down back, his presence would open up play action and he'd be the guy I want running on 3rd and short, not Morton.

Mack would be a welcome addition, he'd give us a big power back and would only see time in the event that Betts was injured. I like Cartwright, but he is rather small for a goal line back don't you think? Our backfield could definitely use the size, the current rotation of backs is kind of smallish.
