Redskins # 1 in GWP Efficiency through 3 Weeks
There will be some surprises in the rankings, so take them with a heavy grain of salt. The results are so nutty, I considered not posting them. But the whole point of this site is to let the numbers speak for themselves, so here they are. This is the time of year that makes the least intuitive sense. Most fans, including myself, are wrapped up in how good various teams "should be" or "were last year." But those notions are based on old information mixed with media hype. With only 3 games of data, there's not a lot to go on. But at this point last year, 10 of the top 11 teams in GWP rankings went on to make the playoffs.
After week 3, the top team is 2-1 Washington, which stands out by virtue of its zero turnovers--no interceptions and no fumbles, lost or otherwise. Last year's AFC South powerhouses Indianapolis and Jacksonville are ranked 23rd and 24th , below even hapless Cincinnati. The explanation is in their respective strengths of schedule. The AFC North might be the strangest division, with 0-3 CIN leading in efficiency, and 2-0 Baltimore 3rd out of 4 teams. Lots more surprises below.
Advanced NFL Stats: Week 3 Efficiency Rankings |
Re: Redskins # 1 in GWP Efficiency through 3 Weeks
Turnovers really do kill you, and if you are on the plus side of the TO battle you are typically going to be a good team. It's almost cliche at this point but it's so true.

Turnovers are the #1 factor that drives winning vs losing. |

I'd say score is probably the number one factor, but turnovers are no doubt important. |

Turnovers reduce scoring chances, so they are directly tied together when you think about it. |
Re: Redskins # 1 in GWP Efficiency through 3 Weeks
Turnovers change the momentum more than anything. If a team can capitilize on the turnovers they get and not create any themselves.

Didn't ARE muff a punt against NO...doesn't that count as a turnover?

Good point, but I think they're talking about the offense. At this rate we could set a record. Compared to last year, Campbell has been amazing protecting the football. Some of our losses last year were directly related to him turning the ball over when we had a chance to take the lead. Great improvement from Jason Campbell. |

I believe GWP efficiency only measures offensive plays. And while I'm not the biggest fan of measuring a teams potential purely by GWP, I will say that this remark is interesting... Re: Redskins # 1 in GWP Efficiency through 3 Weeks
Our turnover margin is the mainreason we are 2-1. Plain and simple. It is hard to lose the turnover battle on a game by game basis and win those games. Any time you force a turnover it is a swing. Add the other's teams average score per drive and your own score per drive and that is the size of the swing. It we're both averaging 3 points per drive then we have a 6 point swing. Simplistic way to look at it for sure but it leads you down the right intellectual path to udnerstanding why turnovers are so important.

Re: Redskins # 1 in GWP Efficiency through 3 Weeks
Call me a Downer but I am getting nervous about all this talk of no turnovers. Seems like I have seen/heard the print media, fan sites and radio shows all say how great our turnover ratio is. To the superstitious person that I am, all this talk only guarrantees that the 'Skins will have a 6 turnover day against Dallas.
That would suck. |
