Laptop deals:
My laptop recently ate it -- so I'm in the market for a new one. If anyone runs across a good deal, I'd appreciate it if you could post here and let me know!

Re: Laptop deals:
I bought a Toshiba through Costco about a year ago. Although like some of the things Costco does (like free tech support), the Toshiba is nothing special. It seems to slow to me

Re: Laptop deals:
This seems pretty decent. $579 for 3 GB of RAM.

Re: Laptop deals:
I have a Dell at home. Had it for three years now not a single problem. Of course I don't know crap about computers but it gets the job done for me.

Keep an eye on these sites for good deals

Re: Laptop deals:
Best site is Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! I just bought a 370 dollar laptop(including taxes and shipping)
It's a netbook -160 GB HD -2G RAM -XP -9 inch monitor -Amazing battery(5+hours) You can get bigger laptops too, all starting around 500-600 dollars. Best deal on the net. If you are trying to blow over 1k I suggest getting a Mac |
Re: Laptop deals:
Yeah, I can get a pretty good deal on a laptop -- my mother's work has a deal with Dell. However, my last computer was a Dell -- and while a lot of things about it I liked, others were less than impressive (the touchpad was nice. A lot of touch pads have strange feelings to them.)

Re: Laptop deals:
I guess the question is what do you intend to use your laptop for? There are a lot of affordable netbooks out there these days.

Re: Laptop deals:
I need some options with it -- mostly used for web browsing/word processing. But I want it to be able to handle games/photoshop/dreamweaver/etc. Has to be relatively powerful.
I must say, Costco is intriguing. I know a guy that bought a TV from there, 2 years later it stopped working. They gave him a full refund. |
Re: Laptop deals:
Costco has recently changed their return policy (90 days), so I'd be careful going that route, but they do extend the manufacturer warranty to 2 years...

I have an older Acer notebook that I've had for 5 years, still running strong (needs to be blown away and reformatted, weekend project). I was going to recommend TechBargains, but Matty already did. Newegg always has decent deals. But if you can take advantage of Dell's Employee Purchase Program, you might as well see what you can do there. |

Watch out for the 4GB of Ram trickeration.
Here's one parting bit of advice: if, like me, you're planning to stick with a 32-bit operating system for the next few years, don't waste your money on 4 GB of RAM. You won't be able to use it all. Buy 3 GB instead.
|

Where I got mine for half off, works fine. It was purchased by a company that went out of Business before they took delivery, returned and then sent to spend life with me. |

I should have mentioned that the Costco laptop has the 64 bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium...but I've run into this problem before, and it's a real pain... |
Re: Laptop deals:
That Costco Acer one looks solid -- trying to decide if it's too heavy to lug around.
