Re: Pirates hijack ship with 21 Americans aboard off Somalia
What are we going to do? Get the entire fleet to patrol the Somali coast?

I'd start with putting heavy pressure on the government. Even though the government doesn't have the means to do anything about it, you have to start there. |
Re: Pirates hijack ship with 21 Americans aboard off Somalia
And next I'd consider heavy satellite surveillance of the entire Somali coast. With that technology these days you don't need boats positioned 10 miles apart. A few boats placed in key position to respond, combined with adequate aerial views, you should be able to sink these ships often enough to curtail the activity.

Re: Pirates hijack ship with 21 Americans aboard off Somalia
Why would people even take a ship that goes by Somalia at this point. Hint: If you're in a boat, stay the hell away from Somalia.

Just call in Chuck Norris.

They don't really have a government so I'm not sure who you're going to apply pressure on. They have a federal government with wannabe leaders no one listens to and they don't have the teeth to go along with words. Asking them to do anything is akin to asking a retarded person for assistance. If there's one country that embodies a post apocalyptic society we're all so familiar with in the movies it's Somalia. As far as satellite surveillance I'm not sure we have enough resources or are ready to pull resources from Iraq, North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan. Honestly, if we were capable we would be doing it. Priacy off the coast of Somalia is nothing new and is a 100+ million dollar business in a country where the GDP is ~5 billion. What these ships need to do is hire an escort service for protection or have on-board armed guards. |

I wish that we could have seen the whole thing go down from start to finish or if somebody had recorded it. It might have looked like one of those "World Dumbest Criminals" type clips. FYI, if you are planning a Highjacking in the near future, make sure that the vessel isn't carrying blue collared Americans. |

Don't wait for the Navy they just float around and get fat.

Re: Pirates hijack ship with 21 Americans aboard off Somalia
Actually the Navy has captured and/or killed several of these hijackers over the past month. One of our navy ships cartured and/or killed like 18 of them in two days. The only reason I know is that the ship came back into port here in our area and the local news covered the story. Its not as easy as people would think to track these guys as they use small boats that are very hard to spot in a large ocean. Remember how long it took the CG to find that boat that had flipped with the NFL players and they had some idea of where to search. Radar will pick them up put it also picks up other stuff floating in the water so picking out what is a boat and what is junk is not that easy. I did read that some of these ship co. have hired Blackwater to provide protection for them but not sure how many do at this time.

Cool deal. It's too bad they don't put that stuff in the news, at least the news I come across. It would be good for morale if they posted how many pirates they greased. Ooo Rah squids. |
