Jason Peters on the trade block...

It's rumored that Jason Peters is on the trading block. Would you be willing to give one of the premier T's in the league a big contract for our 1st and 3rd? From what I've heard on NFL radio, that's what they're looking to get for him. He's only 27 and is a proven NFL commodity. I'm torn, but it doesnt seem like a terrible idea, IMO.

I'd rather not, especially if Oher is available at 13. Peters was undrafted just 5 seasons ago, and look at him now. If anything, his current status should continue to reinforce the value of the draft.

No thanks. If we are gonna trade our 1st and 3rd Id rather go after Peppers. That said we gotta use our picks or hopefully trade down to add more picks.

If we were one RT away from SB contender status I'd say go for it, but we're not. We need two quality starters out of this draft, not one. Actually we need more than that, but we've only got 2 picks in the top 3 rounds, so 2 starters will have to do!

I'd rather see us get a quality tackle at 13 and then a young LB with some talent in the third round.

The issue with Peters is that he is a head case.

Maybe you trade for him and he becomes happy and is a really good OT here for the next 6-8 years.

OR - - maybe you trade for him and he goes bonkers and makes such a pain-in-the-ass of himself that you go out and seek to trade him.

If that happens twice, the price you will get the second time around will not be anything near "a first and a third". Here is where due diligence and a good psych analysis is necessary before you consider making a deal for this guy.

Agreed. Check out this admittedly unofficial list of sacks allowed by LT's in 2008:

He's talented, but it appears that when he is unhappy, he just quits.

Wow, that's an interesting list. Look no further than Ryan Clady at #1 to see the value of a strong rookie tackle prospect in the draft. Just say no to Jason Peters.

No. How many times must we be burned by trading draft picks and giving out big contracts? Plus, as pointed out above, Peters did not play well last year. He was great in 2007, not so much in 2008. He made the Pro Bowl last year on name recognition and previous rep.

Too much to give up and the guy is a bit of a nut job.

Please lets stop going after other teams players who are looking to get paid. We need to put more stock into drafting and developing our own players. Thats why we have scouts and coaches to evaluate and teach. If you look at our roster we have some young players who we have drafted ( Montgomery, Golston,Horton,Landry,Rocky,Cooley,Rogers, Campbell, Blades,Reed D. Thomas, Kelly, Davis, Kareem M.) that are or will contribute this season. If you notice we do not have any Quality offensive Linemen that we have drafted in recent years. I did forget about Rhinehart, but as we know he did not get on the field. We are not even sure he will make the roster for this season. We have a HOF Offensive Line Coach in Joe B. you would think we could find some diamonds in the ruff in the later rounds.

We don't have the cap space to trade for him even if we wanted to pull the trigger.

Re: Jason Peters on the trade block...

I guess I just don't consider a player that goes to the pro bowl and is arguably the best LT in football asking for a new contract as being unreasonable. He's playing on an UDFA TE contract - he deserves more than that. I think all these 'nut job' and 'tough guy to deal with' type comments are a bit far fetched.

I understand not wanting to deal to get him, and hopefully if we take a T high, he'll pan out. For just our 1st round pick, I think I'd do it (assuming we could massage the cap and get him under). A proven commodity with plenty of years left in the league is a good deal to me. Especially if we're thinking about drafting the T out of Alabama who seems like he may be a far larger headache in the NFL.

NFLnick, Im not sure what you mean by 'we already have this thread' I'm not sure what you mean. Im sure this topic is burried in one of the threads on the forum. But that type of forum setup is what drives me away from this site. I can't quickly find discussions on a specefic topic. I have to dig through some broad thread that everyone is talking to themselves about many topics.
