Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
Wow, someone only looked at draft positions:
Fox Sports gives the 'Skins a 'C' After all the quarterback talk and trading-up possibilities, the Redskins were patient and had Texas DE Brian Orakpo fall into their lap with the 13th overall pick. Orakpo had some nicks, but some teams thought he was the draft's best edge pass rusher. The Redskins traded out of the second round and made a local pick in the third round with Maryland cornerback Kevin Barnes, who started 21 games and can be either a zone or man-cover cornerback. Nebraska LB Cody Glenn was suspended for his final three games and was ranked the 34th overall linebacker in the draft. Grade: C Good job not realizing where that pick came from, Fox Sports, but it's Fox.. do you really expect them to research what they spew? Sporting News: Washington Redskins: D-minus This team had an anemic pass rush, and end Brian Orakpo could change that. A lack of picks made it hard to address other needs. Their big move came in free agency, the signing of defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. So what are they giving us a D- for? For not having many picks? I thought that grading would come on what you did with what you have, oh well. |
Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
kind of odd that its unanimous that we got lucky for orakpo to slide to us at 13 (which means a good pick for our slot, grade A), so im guessing that not having 2nd and 4th round picks hurt us in the grading?
cowherd (i actually like the guy as a radio personality, not expert analyst) did his grades today and the guy is testing my morning radio loyalties. He gives his seahawks, eagles and other teams A by considering FA signings of housz, peters etc. he even gave seahawks a higher grade b/c hassleback will not be as injured = more starts. But when it came to the skins, he doesnt consider AH or hall into our "draft grade". the dude gives seahawks credit for their draft b/c they sign housz and hassleback wont be as injured yet he doesnt even mention we signed the gem of FA in AH without giving up a 1st rounder like the eagles did for peters? cowherd i used to like you, i consider myself pretty even keeled but your hate for teh skins is getting to be too much. he didnt talk about orakpo, didnt give AH a mention when he used FA for other teams but all he said about the skins is how stupid we were to make our selection right away and that he is able to read the mind snyder as doing it as a horse n pony show to make up with JC? OTM is slowly coming around to not like cowherd. (yeah 3rd person talk!) go skins!! |
Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
D- is harsh. That said, I think a C is a fair grade given that 3 picks were lost in trades for players that aren't with the team anymore (for Jason Taylor, Pete Kendall, and Erasmus James). Orakpo will be money, Barnes looks solid, and Perhaps Cody Glenn develops into a stud - being a former RB, he's certainly faster and more athletic than most LBs.

I understand you don't have to draft those positions as much now, but these things took place before the draft and shouldn't impact it. |
Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
I know it's fun to look at this stuff but these day after draft grade articles are probably the single most useless NFL writing of the entire year. They belong on a roll...
Do you think if we look back on the Patriots draft grade from the day after they drafted Tom Brady that we will see a bunch of A+ grades. |

I guess everyone has their own biases, and you're right - he's no expert - just a guy who's great to listen to. He was gushing so much about Sanchez today but i imagine he would be BURNING us if we had gotten him. |

I heard Cowherd today too, his logic was a bit flawed. First of all, it's fine to grade the draft -- it just depends on what your terms are. Obviously you can't grade the draftees based on what they've done on the field as a pro because they haven't played yet. But you can certainly grade the draft based on the information already available, the colleges they came from, the systems they were in, how those systems are adaptable to the pro game, how they fared against the competition, their history of injuries, football smarts, their skill sets as they relate to other players at the same position, blah, blah, blah. So yes, there are ways to assess what a team was able to accomplish by the players that were available to them. Without a doubt, the praise given to the Jets for taking Sanchez would be converted into utter contempt if he were snatched up by Dan Snyder. The fact remains though, our quarterback situation was much more settled than it was in New York. So the criticism might have been valid. |
Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
I think it was the lack of picks combined with the media's dislike of Snyder that gave them a low grade.

Yeah. Review after review grades us down because we didn't fill every need. But with our paltry number of picks (no 2nd rounder really hurt), it was impossible to fill every need. |
Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
So they give the Redskin a D for not drafting for need, but also say that the correct draft strategy is to draft best player available? Uh ok.

Last year they were all A's and B's for the Skins draft. But except for Horton last years the Skins draft was a big D-. Top three picks could not get on the field and when they did it was really nothing to talk about!!! So who knows how this draft will work out. Because we still really don't know if the 08 draft was that good!

Patience, please. Sometimes it takes time for guys to work out. If Thomas, Kelly, Davis, and Rinehart improve a lot this offseason, the 08 draft was actually a pretty good one. |
Re: Redskins Draft Grades from all over
I'm a little tired of all of these pundits that would never apply for a job with a nfl team and have to take responsibilty for any of there draft decisions
