Sport Announcers
Being that we really don't have much to talk about right now, I had the question asked to me the other day as to who my favorite sport announer is and least favorite...I had joe buck, Gus Johnson, and brent mussberger as my favorites and I had kornheiser, and Bryant gumbel as my least favorites(there's a reason their not doing they're jobs anymore)
Others I like are al michaels, cris collinsworth, and jim nantz...kenny alberts good to listen to, but is weird looking when they show him, the voice just doesn't match him Now who are your favorite and least favorite sport announcers? |
re: Sport Announcers
Al Michaels, Madden in his prime, Ernie Harwell(longtime radio guy for the Detroit Tigers), Dick Vitale(Zany on TV, but cool at the same time). Aikman does a good job for Fox and is pretty unbiased if he does a Boys-Skins game.

Re: Sport Announcers
Al Micheals, Kenny Albert, Moose and Goose, and good ole Pat Sumerall. I hate collinsworth because he always sticks his foot in his mouth, and is for some reason always hating on the Redskins. Aikman tries, but he is not the most poetic speaker and fumbles his words and misnames players too much. Don't know why but that bothers me. And freakin Joe Buck. He is the biggest prick. Cant stand him!! Anyone else miss dennis miller? Just kidding. and what happened to Dan Fouts? He wasnt too bad.

Re: Sport Announcers
Madden, Glanville and Bradshaw brought some color to the game. Aikman is a pro. Summerall, Enberg, Tirico and Michael's and Joe Buck do or did a good job calling the game. Phil Simms is good.
As far as terrible announcers go, I could really run with this one. Dennis Miller...terrible. Whoever mentioned his name at the meeting should've been fired and asked to leave this fine country. Kornheiser...terrible. Bill Maas is a Madden wanna be and I like Madden. I'm not a fan of Ichabod Crane, I mean Cris Collinsworth. Dierdorf brought little to nothing to game IMO. And there are others im sure. I may catch some heat on this one but hell, this America. I hate the women on the sidelines. I hate Suzy Kolber (I thought that was it was hilarious when Joe Namath told her that he wanted a kiss.) and Lesley Visser and their stupid matching hats and scarves. Andrea Kramer, that red head from ESPN, something Nicols, Pam Oliver, all of them suck. Maybe they don't. Actually they do pretty good job it's just that they're women. I just don't think they have any business questioning or second guessing a coach about their game plan. Football is a man's game. And don't get me wrong, I have no problem with women having positions of power I just don't want to hear them babbling on the sidelines when I'm watching the games on Sunday's. |

I think she brings alot to the game calling. As far as the others go, I am not too familiar with them. |

Re: Sport Announcers
Charrisa Thompson. She's a pro.

Re: Sport Announcers
Hate to say it but I'd take Aikman over just about anyone. Buck's good but I can't get over his perfunctory call of the helmet catch, one of the greatest plays in NFL history. The broadcasting equivalent of dropping a two out fly ball to lose.

Re: Sport Announcers
Dick Stockton is an all-time favorite of mine. The guy just keeps on ticking. He actually was the NBC announcer for the Red Sox-Reds '75 Game 6 when Fisk hit the home run, and he just keeps doing sports, one year after another (he did the Skins-Saints game last season--he made have done another one of our games).
I also have always liked Mike Patrick, and I'm glad I have the MLB package so I can listen to Vin Scully do Dodgers games. |
Re: Sport Announcers
Harry Kalas (RIP), because I grew up on him with the Phillies.
On football, Al Michaels is definitely my favorite play by play guy. Probably have to go with Aikman for commentary because he keeps his cool, isn't overly excitable, and is pretty fair to both sides. He's actually complimentary of the Redskins when the situation calls for it. Know who showed pretty good promise last year was Brian Billick. Tremendous technical analysis of the Xs and Os on the telestrator. And he gives good insight into the psychology of the coach/QB relationship. It was good stuff you couldn't get from anybody else. I hate Jaws when he's in the booth, but love him in the studio. Best breakdown of gametape in history. |
Re: Sport Announcers
I think an underrated reason why the Caps have become so popular in the DC area over the past two seasons is that Joe Beninati is such a damn good announcer. He always does a great job of teaching the audience the finer points of hockey without talking down to the viewers, and he does it in a way that you barely notice it. This helps more casual fans follow the game closer. Since he's on the local broadcast he may seem to be a bit of a homer to non-Caps fans but I still thinks he manages to keep it professional.
As for football, I like Aikman a lot and Joe Buck is okay but I get annoyed when he (and all announcers) pick some random point and harp on it for the rest of the game. There is a CBS team that I like but I can't remember who they are right now since I don't watch as many AFC games. I think it might be Ian Eagle and whoever he's with but I'm not sure. |
