Gibbs' take on Campbell's situation
Asked if he felt Campbell was mistreated by an organization that dangled him for Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez, Gibbs wouldn't bite.

"I have a different outlook on that," Gibbs said of shopping the quarterback he had plucked from Auburn. "At some point you're going to have to take the team down the field in a driving hailstorm to win the game. If you get all uptight about stuff as the quarterback -- if (trade rumors) is something that bothers you -- you're in the wrong position."

Translation: Buck up, Jason.

"You gotta realize an NFL quarterback is going to go through a lot -- all the ones I coached did," Gibbs added through that wheezing laugh of his. "If it wasn't (Mark) Rypien getting benched in the middle of a season, it was Joe Theismann technically going to get benched. Or it was Doug Williams going through two teams and coming here when everybody thought his career was over."
Good stuff, I am sure most of us agree with that.

Also, lol @ the wheezing laugh...hah

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall with Zorn and Gibbs in the same room? That's gotta be some interesting talk going on.

Re: Gibbs' take on Campbell's situation

I just read the article in the washpost about Zorn & Gibbs & felt very encouraged by it. Of course they're not going to tell the media the details of what was discussed, but I would guess 2 players had to be big topics; JC & CP.

Zorn taking Gibbs up on the invitation to the track is a good sign. It's understandable why Zorn shied away from Gibbs some in year 1, he had to make his own impression. Now he needs some perspective & some friendly advice. No better man to give him that than Gibbs.

The quote in the OP is funny because it's exactly the reason I don't like Cutler. How, as a QB, can you be that thin skinned? Who wants to follow that guy? Not I.

Although they seem a bit different(Zorn is more outgoing to the media) they do share their strong faith in common. I am sure that has gotta be a connecting point, along with the love of the game, player development, etc.

yeah, it would be cool if only the warpath had a transcript!

What would really be interesting is to hear what they talked about & then look back at it during the season. I'm specifically wondering if Zorn asked Gibbs about dealing w/Portis. Of all their differences as coaches, this one is stands out to me. Zorn wants to hold his guys accountable in public & treat everybody relatively the same, whereas Gibbs never said anything about players to the press, and gave vets (especially Portis) a lot of leeway.

And it's exactly why we should be proud of the way JC has handled himself. He could have easily made this an ugly situation, but he did "buck up" and has probably won even more respect from his teammates as a result.

Exactly. Very few players in football would have handled that situation well and Jason did. That's something everyone should remember.

Good article. And I hope they had a good discussion. Certainly after his first year, Zorn has got to have some pretty solid questions, and I can't think of anyone else I would rather him get answers from (a close second would be Holmgren). If he is adept at learning, as I believe he is, he certainly has good sources to go to and get advice from the best. I am still high on Zorn and hope he makes the necessary corrections to lead this team to a bright future!

Yeah I am sure Gibbs didn't mean Campbell was being a baby. I think Gibbs' response was framed that way because of the question.

I think Gibbs was sticking up for JC with that comment. The comment about JC needing to buck up by Wise was a little odd as JC has done nothing but buck up all offseason.

Well with Gibbs 2 our O struggled and with Zorn last year our O struggled so I'm not sure what Gibbs could help him with there.

I am pretty sure that Gibbs has a bit of knowledge gained over both stints that would help JZ. Remember Gibbs knows what that 2nd year feels like.

I think JC MUST realize there is a reason why nobody is looking at QB options in New England, Indy, or Pittsburg.
