Who's calling the plays?
 

On the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio yesterday, Joe Theismann said it looks like Don Breaux is calling the offensive plays, not Joe Gibbs. He said something about Breaux having a larger, or thicker clipboard, while Gibbs seems to have a one-page laminated sheet with a smaller selection of plays.

Breaux is a more than capable offensive mind, and has been around the game for a real long time, but I thought Gibbs was the playcaller.

Any thoughts?

Gibbs cleared that up yesterday on his radio show. No, Don Breaux does not call the plays. Joe does. All Don Breaux does is consult Gibbs, and Gibbs makes the call.

Well, that's what I thought. Breaux is sorta like his lieutenant, or right hand man. Makes sense.

We, and many others throw around the "Genius" label quite a bit, and Gibbs certainly comes close, but man, just like Madden said, a naked bootleg right before halftime, with Dallas keyed in on Portis would have been THE perfect call. With as much as the Cowboys were blitzing, I also tend to wonder why he didn't call more screen passes.

But I will say this: There were several drives where Brunell seemed to get hot, and the playcalling really had the Dallas defense on their heels. If you remember back to last season, in the first Cowboy game in Dallas, with Spurrier calling the plays, the Cowboys had an answer for just about everything he threw at them -- and we had NO passing offense. And like Spurrier or hate him, he is generally regarded as an effective playcaller.

On Monday night though, you could definitely see that Gibbs, while far from coaching a perfect game, hasn't lost much over the years when it comes to playcalling even when we were behind, and running the ball wasn't really expected.

gibbs has always called the plays,even when dan henning was his OC.i wonder what the hell williams was doing over there right before halftime?i can't figure that out.i like joe t,but sometimes he speaks with his ass and not his mouth,imo.

Don Breax has the same amount of plays, they just have to print them in a 72 point font for him to read em ;)

I wonder how the play producing process works. Does Joe Gibbs draw up the game plan for the week and then have people like Don Breaux scrutinize it? How are the plays called during game time (is there a certain, general sequence set up)? It's really kind of a fascinating topic.

williams seemed to be over there trying to convince gibbs to not use a timeout and leave too much time for the cowpies and frankly I agree. that first timeout was called way too early and they didn't go with the bootleg or a sweep after the timeout which would have more than likely lead to an easy touchdown.

Williams was out of line there with his stridency - you can't be that demonstrative with your point of view during the game like that. Williams is an assistant coach who has to remember that his job is run the defense. I'm sure his emotions just got the better of him then and we won't see that again.

Does Don Breaux look like Benjamin Franklin or what? :)

williams was a head coach, and understands the game, it was a bad use of a TO, and he knew it... he does call D, but if the O leaves them too much time, that puts him in a bad position...

he just wants to win, like everyone else.

Yeah that whole debacle was painful to watch. I was really surprised by the "Spurrierness" of the situation. It just seemed like we weren't prepared for the situation. Williams was absolutely right in trying to keep the clock moving. It would have worked out in the end though if we had just made better play calls. Gibbs was on with George Michaels and explained they thought the 60 Gut all on 2nd down was a no brainer. It looks ike the Cowbitches got a little lucky on that one since the motion of Cooley(? i think) should have created a soft edge on the right side. Of course it didn't and the rest is history.

I tend to agree with you. Gibbs runs the show and Williams should respect that. I don't think we'll see stuff like that going forward.

When you have to make split second decisions you can't have somebody talking in your ear.

I think in the heat of a game that sometimes peoples emotions can flare up. I think Williams was really trying to do something that he thought was important, but he has to learn that there is a right and wrong way to do something, that's all.
