Redskins-Eagles Offensive Review

Um. No tape this week. If you watched the game, the MNF crew did a really good job pretty much showing you everything that's wrong with the Redskins offense. I could have corrected a few of their assumptions at points, but what's the use? They're more or less right and Jaws is a 100% better football analyst than I am. And Gruden knows a thing or two as well.

Boneheaded plays from Jason Campbell outnumbered good plays about two to one this week, which means quarterback play is a problem. Of course, it's a relatively new problem considering everything else we already knew about the offense, but you can just tack on quarterback play to absolutely everything else. Right now, every single player on the offensive line is below league expectation at that position. Every single one.

Campbell's desire to make this work is killing the team. He can't win by being a caretaker, but that's exactly what this team needs. If he does what it takes to win with this team, he's out. If he just wings it, plays completely erratically, and throws the ball all over the field, he's out.

The Redskins' stat line from this game looks a lot like a normal teams' stat line, which it hasn't for the entire Zorn era. The losing quarterback threw 43 times. It's the third time in the Zorn era that Campbell threw for more than 40 attempts (Pittsburgh in 2008 and Detroit in 2009), and was a career high. It was nice to see him not protected from embarassment in the second half of a game where the Redskins were completely dominated in the first half.

But it's not like things got better because of it. On top of not having the confidence in the OL to play well, he's soon going to be too hurt to play well. And then that's the end of it. You'll need a new QB. Problem is, if you can't take a player who was playing as well as Campbell was in the first half of last year and get a franchise QB out of him, don't bother drafting a different guy. You have no inkling of a structure in D.C. to develop a quarterback. This team needs a quarterback who has already been developed to go with the offense that it needs to spend time developing. They need receivers, they need lineman, they need runningbacks, and they need them all through the draft. Make sure the quarterback is someone who is pre-accomplished.

Please end the Mike Williams experiment. Put Levi Jones at LT. Put Stephon Heyer at RT. Get Will Montgomery off of a football field, he's not an NFL quality lineman. If that doesn't fix the OL, put Edwin Williams in for Rabach.

Santana Moss hasn't been open pretty much all year, and drops TD passes that hit him in the hands. No one should be following him while he ad-libs. He has had THREE YEARS to develop the kind of rapport with Jason Campbell where he could change that slant route in the second quarter to a go route, and he simply hasn't bothered to work with Jason. Moss is a zero on this team. If you changed the quarterback, you could probably get something out of Moss, but why? Moss is gone after 2010 anyway, and you'd lose whatever you've developed from Randle El in this offense over the past two years. Sure, you're probably going to change the offense at years' end anyway, but if Moss is unwilling to do what it takes to be a great WCO receiver, then to me, he's choosing his own career path.

Good efforts today from Devin Thomas and Fred Davis. If Cooley really is out for this season, this is their offense now. It'd be nice if they could use this time to develop a rapport with Jason Campbell, but, you know, that probably doesn't even matter. Fred Davis has shown in the past that he can handle some defensive ends in this league one on one in pass protection, and today he simply showed that he can't be used in that capacity against ends like the Eagles have. Big difference between C.J. Ah You and Trent Cole.

Clinton Portis, I thought, ran harder in the second half than the first, but I think he's done. He's become a traditional power-back grinder in the running game, and behind this OL, that's not what this team needs. He's very frusterated that they won't leave him in there on third downs to help protect Campbell, where he actually is valuable, but Zorn claims he hasn't learned the assignments. I say: he can't be any worse than those that know the assignments, but he's a zero on first and second down runs, not that there are a whole lot of backs who could hit these holes right now.

So you currently have five below expected players on the OL, a quarterback who isn't playing well, a fullback who isn't blocking well, your franchise TE who will miss some time, a number one receiver who isn't any help to his quarterback, a revolving door of number two receivers, and a runningback who lacks general explosiveness. I count ten holes on this offense.

How many picks do we have again?

That was quick, but comprehensive. JC's wind-up seems to grow every week too.

The line is indeed horrible, no excuse to have that bad of a line and facing a real rush for the first time since week 1 really showed that.

Here's a question; if we DO draft a QB, who the hell is going to coach him? Either head or QB coach, we don't have those answers and I think that we really do need to look towards FA for our next guy, even if it's only for a year or two.

If we draft a QB, it'd better be in the lower rounds. We cannot and should not draft a QB with the 1st rounder.

This doesn't mean I'm done with Game Reviews, btw. I just have nothing really to add that the MNF crew didn't note. It was a particularly well called game. Not by the officials though.

Now, that exact same offense would yield a likely 10 win team, and instead, we're a 13 PPG offense who can't do anything but put the ball on the ground.

The fans really do deserve what they are getting, in my humble opinion. Not you specifically in any way, but anyone who lamented how screwed up our offense was last year when we didn't have any other help should be loving our production these days.

I was specifically referring to people who thought making more turnovers was the way to salvation.

Well, we made it. Where's our playoff ticket?

At this point, the more embarrassing it looks out there, the better, I'm afraid. Nothing is going to convince Danny to get a real gm except the total collapse we're seeing now.

This is not a pro-level offense, either in scheme or personnel. What a joke.

Betts looked better as a lead-blocker than Sellers to me, I didn't pay attention to it the whole game though.

do we have a first round pick? if we do, we need to trade it for 2 or 3 picks. Problem is, do you draft a quarterback or draft O linemen? Problem is, there are so many needs:

I feel like this is the priority:
OT(2),QB,C,WR maybe?
