Article on Kevin Colbert -- Steelers Dir. of football operations
Pretty interesting read. I'd never heard of this guy before, and it sounds like that's exactly the way he prefers it. I hate the Steelers, but no one can deny they have themselves on an incredible run. I'm not sure what his contract status is, but when people wonder who should be hired as a GM, I hope this guy gets some consideration.
The article goes into his personal life, (not as interesting) but here are some quick points that stand out:
Colbert is the Pittsburgh Steelers director of football operations, which means that he's the main man responsible for drafting players, signing free agents and making trades. His decisions have helped fuel two Super Bowl titles and four AFC Championship game appearances for the Steelers since he was hired in 2000. But ask him about his first round picks - Ben Roethlisberger, Santonio Holmes and Troy Polamalu - and you'll get a shrug. "If you miss on a first-rounder, that's inexcusable," Colbert says. Of course, you'll have to excuse many others around the NFL whose first-rounders have flopped. Ask Colbert about the success of late-round picks like Brett Keisel, and you'll get a ringing endorsement of the excellence of defensive-line coach John Mitchell. Point out the success he and the Steelers have had in getting All-Pro work from nondrafted players like Willie Parker and James Harrison, and you'll hear praise for the talent and character of those players.
Candid Talk with Kevin Colbert, Pittsburgh Steelers director of football operations: Season Preview: Annual Football Edition 2009 |

A good drafter would be an awesome addition to the Redskins...Im tired of how next to none of our 1st round picks work out.

Eric DeCosta or Brian Gaines

Re: Article on Kevin Colbert -- Steelers Dir. of football operations
We need someone who can properly evaluate offensive talent. Our defensive draft picks have all been solid. Besides Cooley I can't recall any sound offensive draft picks in ages.

We haven't drafted an impact offensive player in over 10 years!!!!! And he was an OL! Wow, have we been terrible in assessing offensive talent over the years. |
Re: Article on Kevin Colbert -- Steelers Dir. of football operations
I'm not sure why Colbert would want to join us but we do need improvement in terms of personnel assessments. But the Steelers have something else that we do not: coaches who get the best out of their players, especially on offense.

I would argue Landry isn't playing up to his top 10 draft status. |
Re: Article on Kevin Colbert -- Steelers Dir. of football operations
A guy like this probably wouldn't have anything to do w/ lil Danny, and lil Danny wouldn't have anything to do w/ him. Muff said.

I agree Landry is a disappointment as a top 10, but then again I don't know who to compare him to. Who could have we picked instead, offense or defense, who is worthy of a pick that high? |

Rogers is shut down corner, he sucks at making plays but he shuts down receivers.. Granted, this year he wasn't so good like before but it's pretty obvious he has gave up on this team.. But Rocky, I believe he's quietly having a pro bowl season.. Our LBs always get snubbed, London is having a pro bowl season, like always.. Orakpo, well he might can't cover for shit but he's relentless when it comes to going after a QB (but of course, that's different topic since he's supposed to be DE).. Yes, Landry hasn't live up to our expectations.. Nor to Blache, I'm assuming based on his comments about giving him chances to make plays.. But Landry's main responsible is not to give up big plays.. He has done that pretty well.. He just need to tone down his ego and stop trying to be Sean Taylor, just be himself on the field.. |

Re: Article on Kevin Colbert -- Steelers Dir. of football operations
I think the real question on everyone's mind is, is his last name pronounced col-bert or col-bare. It sounds like this guy would be an amazing hire for us which of course means it'll never happen.
