Zorn Fired

Posted at 5:20 AM ET, 01/ 4/2010

Per Redskin Insider Redskins fire Zorn after 2 seasons

The Washington Redskins fired Coach Jim Zorn early Monday morning following a two-year stint that began with his surprising elevation from obscure quarterbacks coach and ended with a dismissal that seemed inevitable following the Redskins' disastrous four-win season.
Zorn's firing was reported by WRC and WUSA.
Zorn, 56, was fired shortly after the team returned from its trip to San Diego, where it lost the season finale 23-20 to finish 4-12, the team's worst record in 15 years. He finished his tumultuous tenure 12-20, and had one year left on his contract.
The Redskins could be preparing to name his replacement within hours after they announced his departure. In December, Washington forced out longtime front office executive Vinny Cerrato and announced the hiring of new general manager Bruce Allen within two hours, putting in motion the overhaul of the franchise's infrastructure after a 10-year period that featured just two playoff appearances.
Zorn arrived at Redskins Park ahead of the team buses at roughly 2:45 a.m. He was escorted to his car by team security some two hours later.
Former Denver and Oakland coach Mike Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls with Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway and the Broncos, has been the presumed hire for weeks. Several NFL sources have said over the past month that they believe Shanahan has long been the choice of Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder, who now must hire his seventh head coach since he took control of the team in 1999.
The Redskins are already cleared to make a swift hire. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, which oversees the NFL's so-called "Rooney Rule" that requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coaching and top-level front office positions, said last month that current secondary coach Jerry Gray, an African American, has already interviewed for Zorn's job. The alliance, therefore, believes the Redskins have complied with the rule, and no further interviews would be necessary.

Yep heard the news at 6am. So, long Zorn. I hope we stay away from drafting a Qb. Still predicting the skins as taking Bradford.

There is also a report that there is a team meeting at 1030am with a news conference scheduled at 12pm. I wonder if the news will be about the firing of Zorn or the hiring of Shannahan?

Next! I'd anticipate a 6pm presser introducing Shanahan.

I'm glad they didn't drag it out. It's better for all concerned this way. So long ZMan and good luck.

Wow!!!! Who would have ever thought this would happen......hate to celebrate anyone that looses a job by firing, but good bye JZ. He should have never been hired as HC anyway. Hiring him as OC was even a stretch.

Re: Zorn Fired

I respect Jim Zorn as a classy guy, and a good man in the face of horrible circumstances.

But like i've said, we all realize now that he was in over his head...at most he should have been a QB Coach or something like that.

I wonder what kind of future he will have in the NFL....Good luck to Jim

...according to reports, (ESPN 980) he was getting off the bus, directed to his office, and fired two hours later. Security apparently escorted him out of the building.

Holy Cow...thats crazy. Security escorting him out! He must have made a scene or something maybe?? If not that just seems really disrespectful!

That had to be quite the plane ride back yesterday

Looks like Shanahan era can begin now...but I've been told not to discount Cowher quite yet. To which I say "Wow!"

That's reportedly inaccurate. Security didn't escort him out. But I wasn't there so I don't know.

Hinde sight is 20/20, but I think everyone was kinda happy we picked up someone who was not a big name and was supposed to be an offensive guru according to many. Who the many were I don't know. He could have turned out to be awsome and we all would have been sitting here saying what a great pick up and steal. Instead it failed. Failed for many of reasons but it doesn't matter when your in a job that only wins and losses count.

All said and done I'm happy to see this era finally come to an end.

I am interested to hear what Zorn has to say when he has his $ in his pocket and is 100% free of the Redskins.

I dont think he'll have any real zingers or trash talk (he's too classy for that) but I do think he will speak and if one can read between the lines will be able to understand the mess he was dealing with.

I agree. If he's smart he keeps his mouth shut and says "It is what it is." Owners would respect that and he might get another gig in the future. I honestly hope Holmgren picks him up for the Browns as either QB coach again or OC and trains him so he can get another gig sometime. He is a nice guy.

Re: Zorn Fired

Good guy, very poor head coach. Was another bad hire, he was just in over his head. He was mistreated as well and never given a fair shot..but that WAS how Vinny and Danny Boy ran sh*t.

Roger Goodell will be on the Joe Theismann show at 905 on ESPN 980. You know he won't give full disclosure, but I hope he has good comments on the Rooney Rule, CBA among other things.

Re: Zorn Fired

Goodell did not address the Rooney Rule question that I heard. I didn't hear Theismann even ask him, so maybe I just missed it. On the CBA, he said an uncapped year looked very possible, but that there have been several meetings towards preventing a lockout in 2011. nothing else really caught my attention. JC is due on shortly according to Theisman.

if this is true what a very classless thing to do. taking a guy off the bus in front of everyone is just stupid.

according to the latest reports, he arrived before the bus, and was not in front of the team when any security may have been with him.

That said, i worked for a GREAT company in colorado, classy in every way (and that's not just cuz we got a free trip to Mexico every year :) ) and it was their policy that once an employee was fired, especially one in higher positions, they were escorted from the moment they were told to the moment they were off company property. It only happened a couple times, and was done respectfully, but since I was in IT it was my job to lock their accounts as soon as the firing took place. It was never fun, but still, thats how it was done.

as regards us ever hearing "zorns side of the story," i doubt we ever will. zorn probably signed some sort of NDA in which he would forfiet the remainder of his contract if he ever decides to "air dirty laundry."

Re: Zorn Fired

Well like a lot of other fans I feel Zorn is a real gosh darn good guy, but not a Head Coach in the NFL. Apparently he wasnt real big on preparation for certain game time situations according to some players, which looking back to his first press conference(maroon & black) the writing was on the wall from the get go! Anyway time for a New Beginning!!
Really? Interesting
and one of the sites most seasoned members (who i believe is on the payroll) just posted that the front office monitors the redskins one tracking thread and have been known to use decoy planes in the past...

however the very concept of doing something like that is ridiculous and a huge waste of expense just to mislead a few people online.

which is why that site sucks. whole lot of nothing going on over there.

That is how several places do it, including where I work. It is not because someone has caused a scene, it is just protocol to prevent somebody from doing something stupid. It is not disrepectfull, they are just escorting you by walking along side you. They will not put their hands on you or anything unless you give them a reason.

I'd be surprised if they use decoy planes. But they do have like 3 or 4 planes. But anyway I haven't heard anything about any plane heading there. Just that Shanahan is "allegedly" going to be at Redskins Park this afternoon/evening.

Anyone know who did the actual firing? I'm sure Snyder got Allen to do his dirty work for him.
