F...Getting stuff sprung on you last minute for work
so I had Friday scheduled off, figured I'd relax a bit tonight, have a couple drinks with some friends and then tomorrow visit some family I hadn't seen in awhile in DC (via commuter bus)
welp, today after I got off of work I picked up a 750 of laphroaig and some rum I got a notice from the district manager that we have a meeting tomorrow at 8am.. and I already know that it's not good and what it's about.. but at the same time not my issue really so by the time the shitshow is over I'll be tired, the commuter bus won't be running in the area.. and my whole day will be over.. by 9am or so so now I have to cancel on my friends tonight and family tomorrow all due to this.. what happened to giving decent notice? he should've called for it last week so that we could adjust the schedule around it /rant |

Re: F...Getting stuff sprung on you last minute for work
that blows man. work is a pimp, and we're all whores.
Working in IT, there have been many a vacation day where I've had to do some kind of work. The best is something's been broken for a while, and they decide the day you're off to call and nag about it having to be fixed, and naturally it has to be right away because it's for some big meeting but no one had the gumption to look into it until 5 minutes before the meeting starts. </rant> |
Re: F...Getting stuff sprung on you last minute for work
I'm still bitter over the fact that a couple of months ago I was covering stuff for my boss while he was on vacation and (obviously) we had a major problem pop up at about 4:45 on a Friday. To make matters worse it wasn't my office's fault but we had to work that weekend to fix it. I ended up at my desk for about 10 hours that Saturday, did work at home on Sunday, and then was there for about 10 hours a day on Monday and Tuesday.
That kind of thing is very uncommon for my work and since I'm salaried and we've been on a wage freeze for over a year and a half they couldn't do much to compensate me for my time. Like I said, still bitter. |
Re: F...Getting stuff sprung on you last minute for work
Maybe your being proposed to? My wife (girlfriend at the time) was all pissed because one Friday she thought she was going to take off her boss suddenly called her in for "very important meetings". They were just bogus meetings I had asked him to set up to give me time to spruce up her apartment and get dinner ready so I could propose in style. She was sooooo pissed on Thursday night that she had to work. Even more pissed that I didn't care.
But anyway, yeah that sucks. We've all been there I'm sure |

I don't know.. all that I know is that I'm new enough that the bad audit isn't my fault, but I'm new enough that I need to be there too. |

Re: F...Getting stuff sprung on you last minute for work
Ugh, F last minute shit.
Always happens when you've got something else going on, planning on leaving work early, day off, etc. Back when I was going to school at night for my graduate program it always seemed like shit would go haywire on a night when I had class and just couldn't possibly stay late. Some people would try to make me feel bad for leaving but I was like F you, do you know what I'm paying for these classes?! |

He had a hotel make up their room while they were out so he could "propose in style" but it took the staff longer than expected. Luckily the girl at the front desk was smart enough to realize it so she grabbed them as they were headed to the elevator to say there was problem with their credit card or some such nonsense. My friend was able to play along long enough that they finished the room up despite his girlfriend's bitching. |

You know what they say about the rat race, "Even if you win, you're still a rat".

Re: F...Getting stuff sprung on you last minute for work
Happened to me 4th of July weekend. I scheduled Friday off and on Thursday PEPCO decided that they were going to shut off power to my primary building Friday night into Saturday morning. I run a 24x7 operation. When the people that I support got word of this they wanted my crew running both here and at my "Hot Site". We are short staffed as it is and I supposed to be enjoying a long weekend. I was fortunate enough to not have to cancel my plans but I was jumping through my ass on Friday and Saturday on my blackberry to make sure that I had coverage and everything was going smoothly instead of enjoying those days at the beach.
