Gibbs = 1 season wonder?!?!?!

Chris Mortensen says that some Beltway insiders are saying because of Gibbs diabetic condition, he may not return to the sidelines next season and just be the GM.

Nothing confirmed, of course, but I just heard it and thought i'd post it to get some thoughts, comments from my fellow Redskin fans.

Gibbs has said different, thats what I'm going with. I'll tell you what I wouldnt mind, if this condition was actually effecting Gibbs. If he became a " figure-head" type head coach (like Bobby Bowden has become in Fla. St) and is still the head coach, is at pratice and still works hard, but has someone else do the all nighters, I wouldnt be that pissed. If he's one and done, and its legiamtley because of his condition, I guess I couldnt blame him, but I would be pissed off as all hell.

I think this is just some people making up b.s., and I hope I'm right. We cant have another turnover in coaching though. IF, and thats a HUGE IF, Gibbs had to take a redcued role, I want the next "head-coach" to be someone on the current staff(williams), and keep the same guys there, with a new O-Cordinator. I pray that this is just speculation though.

I doubt that very much, it would be akin to admitting defeat. It's more likely he'll transition to GM after a winning (or +.500) season.

He seems to be back to his old ways of putting in insane hours and sleeping in his office, but I don't see him walking away after one season. I can't see him leaving the franchise hanging like that.

Coming in he knew it was going to be a huge challenge, and I really don't think he would have come back if he had any inclination that he couldn't handle it physically and mentally.

We'll see.

I hope it's not true. #1. Because I love our current staff and we really need a coaching staff in place for more than 2 seasons if we really want to win. And #2. I think we are an injury (Jansen) and a couple of role players from having a winning team if we keep our core intact.

There's been some talk about that here in DC. But it's usually something like John Riggins saying "I have no inside information here but I'm just saying I don't know if Gibbs would come back. And you have to wonder if his health hasn't been afected by all this. That's just my opinion"

And somehow that turns into what Mort said.

I love Gibbs but let's be honest here, his strength is as a head coach. General Manager isn't really his forte.

last night on the "Joe Gobbs Show" (local NBC 4), he said that he wasn't going anywhere.

Gibbs would be a terrible GM. He is a coach, thats where his talent is. I think a better solution is perhaps him giving up the offensive play calling. Making him more of a manager. I def. wouldn't mind him going out and hirign a new offensive coordinator. He can still have heavy influence in what we want to do on offense. But someone younger can take care of all the details and call teh plays.

Well, he did say the same thing back in '92 before he retired. There was some speculation, but for the most part his retirement caught people offguard.

Still, I don't think he'll walk after this season.

In 92 he wasn't fully diagnosed as diabetic . The diabetic condition is a dificult one to pick up general fealing of being unwell inquenchable thirst constant fealing of tiredness and nausia, loss of appitite and dizzyness are all symptoms but they can be so insepid it can be months or years before the symptoms begin to add up and the condition is recognised . It is hard to understand if you have never been with someone who has developed this condiditon in later life as Gibbs did how it can effect every aspect of thier life and how depressing it can be.

Since 92 Gibbs left football went on to be diagnosed recieved treatment and ran a sucessful race team. I know diabetis is associated with a whole range of other illnessess some very serious indeed but normally doctors are looking out for these but i don't know maybe Gibbs is fealing unwell and Morton has some insight into that but personally i think it is just speculation and the situation couldn't be any more different that it was in 92.

That is just par for the course. When you're having a losing season the rumor bin is going to be full.

I don't see him walking away, but honestly, if he becomes our GM we're in for a long X amount of years.
