Interesting stat, you interpret
So I was looking up player stats on nfl.com and saw that 4 of the top 7 tacklers come from the redskins (Landry=2 Fletcher/Hall/McIntosh=3 way tie for 7th). At first glance one might think this is a good thing, but I view it as bad. It means two things to me. 1. It means that we cannot get the other teams off the field and let them drive on us alot. 2. It means that many of our players are not pulling their weight and these guys are covering for others mistakes. You could argue that it is a result of our scheme where certain players are supposed to get tackles, which might be true and probably contributes, but I am not buying it as a full on explanation as to why we have 4 of the top 7 tacklers on our team.

it's been that way for the past few years i feel, didn't london lead the leauge for a while? and you can't blame it on our defense getting off the feild, they held gb to 13 points thats a pretty amazing stat right there. once our offense starts to click a little bit more then they can sustain longer drives and in turn they themselves can keep our d off the feild

Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
First of all, the stat doesn't mean much. I think the most important stat on this defense is the turnover count... that's where the purpose of the defense is.
Landry getting these tackles is pretty big, because they're utilizing him correctly, and he's getting up in the box and making plays. As far as the linebackers... It doesn't really matter. It probably means that the opposing team offense is running more plays, and therefore we have more opportunities to get tackles. It's not a good stat. At any rate, as long as we're forcing turnovers... this defense can give up 2 gillion yards, and we're still going to win games. |
Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
It's not good when your DBs are leading the league in tackles.

Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
Landry plays in the box a lot, so the fact that he's racking up a lot of tackles isn't a big concern to me.

Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
To me it means our defense is on the field too much. But I think its a positive that Landry, Fletch and Rocky are doing their job on a top notch level. I think ideally we want our SS and both inside LBs making the tackles on our D. So more of a positive than a negative IMO.

Only about 10% snaps. I see him covering WR or playing deep safety pretty much all the time now. |

While true, we're in the top ten for avg points allowed per game, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries. Tied for third in passes defensed. We'd probably be leading the league in takeaways if Los could catch a cold (instead we're dead middle, tied for 16th). I know it's cliche, but "bend, don't break" seems to apply here. |

We're still a bit early to get a good read statistically where we are, but it ain't a bad start. We've obviously got some things to fix on D, but the way the offense is playing right now we should be very happy with the last two wins. |

I'd much rather have an opportunistic D that gives up gains but not scores, AND comes away with turnovers. |
Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
The only problem that I have in those stats is seeing Hall with as many stats as Fletch and Rocky. As Matty said, LL plays in the box a lot so he might as well be a 5th LB there. I like seeing Rocky and Fletch up there, I would imagine in the 3-4 you'd want your ILBs to have a rack of a tackles.
I wonder if someone tracks missed tackles, I'm sure we'd be up there in that category. I'd like to see less of that...though I think they are improving. |
Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
All what matters is POINTS folks.

Re: Interesting stat, you interpret
I live in Tennessee Titans country and they gave up 400 yards passing to Romo, gave up 100 yards rushing to Felix Jones and Miles Austin put up 166 and a TD on them Sunday, but the Titans won. (Yes baby!) What stat should you look at????? Romo threw 3 INTs and the Titans did not turn over the ball once. So net Turnovers for the game was +3 Titans. Beyond points, turnovers is only stat that matters.
