Wilbur Marshall Not Doing Well
 

How coincidental, in the midst of labor strife we read now about one of our own suffering from the many ills associated with playing the game of football. Wilbur was one of the best FA signings the Redskins ever made, and helped transform our defense into a SB winner. This is another of so many sad stories.

Oh man, I love these stories. Hopefully the NFL can extend the season to 25 games leaving me with even more of these stories to read in a couple of years. Screw player safety. I want to be able to tell my kids about how the football players of their generation are pussies and brag about the stupid shit the players of my generation did like going straight back into a game with a concusion. CAN'T WAIT!

Very sad, but I'm not going to just assume that the Bears screwed him in the deal. He did leave Chicago as a free agent & got paid decently in DC. Not saying that they are right, just saying that I'm sure they have a legal argument as to why they didn't pay him.

The saddest thing about guys like this is that they are way old at a young age.

Trying to find any information I can as to why the Bears stopped paying him after 11 yrs.

Marshall: "I had a guaranteed contract and the Bears were suppose to pay $72,000 for 19 years. They stopped paying after 11. It's crazy. They re-negged on a guaranteed contract...[B][U]I deferred my signing bonus to help them out.[/U][/B] I took out a note lump sum and and they had to keep making payments on the note. They stopped making payments...The thing is, I had to put up collateral for this note. $600K."

I wonder what the Bears have to say about this?

I would guess that they would say his deal guaranteed him 11 years worth of payments IF he remained on the roster, etc. The article said that he sued the nfl & won after 11 years, but implied that pertained only to his filing for disability. I don't see how he would just let the Bears stop paying him w/out some legal action. My guess is that the Bears don't owe him a thing, and never have.

But Wilbur Marshall said that anyone can go to nfl.com and look up his contract to see that the 19 year reference can be found (I haven't done it yet). The Bears are a notorious club for putting the screws to players during Wilbur's day.

Maybe the organization is better to deal with now that the MacKladcy's (sp) sold there majority ownership to the present people. I get the impression Wilbur Marshall was just too naive and nice to the Bears.

I think Wilbur Marshall was the first FA that the Skins signed. They got him for 6 MIL big ones back in the day.

How sad, I wonder if future generations will view the NFL in the same manner as we view the old gladitorial games in Rome? It's staggering how the injuries mount over a protracted period. He was definitely one of my favorite Redskins. May Cutler bring the Bears many more interceptions for years to come.

This is tragic. I'm 9th generation Florida gator and Wilber was the first player I really loved. Sucks.

That's a real shame. I think the owners are a bunch of greedy POS, and I hope the players hold out for as long as it takes. The NFL is terrible to it's retired vets who made the league what it is today, they want players to play 18 games with no extra money, and they want an extra $1B but won't open their books to explain why. F#%k them.

You really have to wonder how long football as we know it will last. Sure the money will always be there so that alone will sustain it. But given all the nutritional/workout advancements, players are getting bigger, faster, and stronger every year. That alone is going to lead to more injuries. Couple that with all the medical advancements that are showing just how violent and damaging football can be...

he was the first free agent in the nfl, and the skins got him for two first round picks, but we also won a super bowl. atleast we [I]used[/I] to be good at free agency.

It just amazes me that the NFL and Roger G. can preach all this safety stuff, yet ask these guys to play two more games when there are so many ex players that are in Marshall's shoes. Unbelievable.

^ I recently had the opportunity to visit with one of my good friends (Willie Wood) who played for the Packers during the time when teams played only a twelve game schedule. He's had to endure seemingly endless suffering for almost thirty years as a result of combined injuries sustained over the course of his career.

For years, his wife has had to help him in and out of bed as a result of both knee and hip replacement surgeries along with a host of other injuries.

We spoke briefly about the current labor dispute and the thought of an eighteen game season. He reiterated what a complete disaster he felt it would be to even be considered. He played far fewer games during his time, he's seventy five years old now with very limited disability and a body that wishes for younger days done differently.
