You're the GM - What do you do?

I remember last year there was a thread like this that created some good discussions.. I figured I'd bring it back for this year.

What I would do:
Draft
Round 1: Robert Quinn OLB, North Carolina
Round 2: Jake Locker QB, Washington
Round 5: Kenrick Ellis NT, Hampton
Round 5: Tim Barnes C, Missouri
Round 6: Stephen Burton WR, West Texas A&M
Round 7: Depth OT
Round 7: Depth LB

Free Agency
I do absolutely everything I can to get Paul Posluszny (Longshot)
If unsuccessful I go after Barrett Ruud (Ex-Allen draft pick, reasonable).
Re-Sign Santana Moss, Jammal Brown, H.B. Blades, Will Montgomery, Rex Grossman, and Chris Wilson at the best price possible.
Tender Rocky McIntosh, Reed Doughty, and Stephon Heyer and pray for my life that teams have interest.
Allow Carlos Rogers, Andre Carter, Philip Buchanon, to leave and show them the door on the way out and in Carlos' case personally drive him to the airport.
I would look for some depth at Corner, Outside and Inside Linebacker in free agency.

Trades
Attempt to trade Donovan McNabb for a 5th-6th rounder in the 2012 draft.
Attempt to trade Haynesworth for a 3rd-4th rounder in the 2012 draft.
If no one bites, release McNabb and hold on to Haynesworth and well um.. be depressed.
Attempt to trade Chris Cooley for a 1st round pick in 2012, if unsuccessful settle for a high 2nd.

Lineup
LT: Trent Williams
LG: Kory Lichtensteiger
C: Casey Rabach/Tim Barnes *Casey will be gone in 2012.
RG: Will Montgomery
RT: Jammal Brown
QB: Rex Grossman/Jake Locker
HB: Ryan Torain/Keilland Williams
WR: Santana Moss/Anthony Armstrong/Malcolm Kelly
TE: Fred Davis
DE: Adam Carriker
DE: Philip Daniels *I'm going into the 2012 draft looking at this position closely.
NT: Anthony Bryant/Kenrick Hampton
OLB: Brian Orakpo
OLB: Robert Quinn
ILB: Paul Posluszny/Barrett Ruud
ILB: London Fletcher
CB: DeAngelo Hall/Kevin Barnes
FS: Oshiomogho Atogwe
SS: Laron Landry

Future
I'm looking at finishing 8-8 at best and earning once again a top 15 draft pick. I will hopefully have an extra 1st from Chris Cooley along with a 5/6th from McNabb and a 3rd/4th from Haynesworth. This draft will be all about getting a quality Defensive End along with a Receiver.

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?

I might die out of shock if we go 8-8 with that team. We should be competitive for Andrew Luck with that roster so locker would be a waste of a pick.

Plus Moss isn't staying, there is a reason why he opted out of his contract that was going to overpay him a ridiculous amount. Neither Puz nor Rudd will be let go. 4 year players who consistently lead their team and the league in tackles are almost always re-signed or tendered.

Lastly, there are 32 teams in the NFL. Odds are 8-8 is not a top 15 pick. This year the only two teams that went 8-8 are picking at 16 and 17.

I would release Haynesworth. This team has more important things to do than to keep this circus for another year. It's just Snyder's money that gets lost, it's not like we gave up draft picks for the guy (unlike with McNabb).

The thing is this team is better than last year's team that went 6-10. We will not be anywhere near Andrew Luck which is 1st overall. The second ranked QB in Matt Barkley will be gone higher than he should a la Blaine Gabbert, only even more because of his USC experience. Not to mention I don't like him at all, and therefore in my opinion no Jake Locker is not a waste of a pick.

Moss likely won't stay, and if you're correct than I don't see why we can't target another free agent. Pudz is a longshot as I stated, but Barrett Ruud is more likely to go than he is to stay. He was neglected last year by management in a contract extension when they decided to give it to Donald Penn instead. Not to mention he had a terrible year by his standards. I will not be surprised if he's a target for Bruce Allen this off-season.

Okay so that top 15 pick which speaks for itself and can be anywhere from 1-15 could possibly be the 16th or 17th pick? Would you like me to have said top 17 pick?

Good thread, but it seems like we kind of have talked about this, to varying degrees

Here

And

Here

Also, they’ve already cut Andre Carter

And they’ve tendered Blades and Wilson

And I’m not sure the guys who’ve mentioned are even eligible to be tendered. Then again, who knows with no CBA

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?

Focus on addressing our greatest needs with our best resources: QB, RT, RDE, NT, C/OG

I would spend this next season developing our young players.

Allowing them the opportunity to either play there way into or out of a future with the Burgundy and Gold going forward.

I would hope to come out of this draft/FA with a long term solution at: QB, RT, RDE/NT,

I would avoid spending heavily in FA

Simple! Trade back, Draft on both sides of the line, and sign FAs for both sides of the line.

First task would be to get rid of Mike Shanahan and find a coach with his best years in front of him, not behind him.

Is it just me who thinks it's inevitable that Mike is setting Kyle up for his first head coaching job? What better way to retire that watch your son take over.

You're naming Barnes the starting corner?
:(
We cant afford to let Rogers go, need to find a way to keep him for the right price.

For that to have a chance they will have to show some serious improvement over the next few years.

Re: You're the GM - What do you do?

After waiting in this lack of an offseason, I have had more time to think about strategy. In the draft I am doing anything I can to get the 17th and 60th pick from NE for our first. You can call me nuts, but it's possible until it isn't possible. I also think McNabb still has value in this league.

Draft:

Round 1 Trade down with NE (17) Mike Pouncey OG Florida
Round 2 (41) Phil Taylor NT Baylor
Round 2 Trade down with NE (60) Andy Dalton QB TCU
Round 3 Trade with Cardinals for McNabb (69) Ryan Williams RB VTech
Round 5 Traded to Cardinals with McNabb
Round 5 Trade for Haynesworth from Bills Edmund Gates WR Abilene Christan
Round 6 D’Aundre Reed, DE Arizona
Round 7 Anthony Sherman, FB UConn
Round 7 Kris Durham WR Georgia

Free Agents (no capp)

Top Tier
Lamarr Woodley LB Pittsburgh
Namdi Asomugha CB Oakland
Sidney Rice WR Vikings
Ryan Harris T Denver
Marc Bulger QB Baltimore
Paul Posluszny ILB Bills

Lower Tier
Steve Smith WR NYG- not sure we would get him but I want to drive the price up

TO- Regardless of if you love him or hate him he shut up and produced last year. If he can stay like that I'd take him here.

Alex Smith QB 49ers- I don't want grossman here and this kid could get his chance here warming the spot for dalton to develop if we don't get Bulger.

Alan Branch DE/ NT Cardinals: He is Young and was a hell of a player at Michigan project player

Joey Porter LB Cardinals- Can he be a big enough distraction on the field to free up Rak? Target if we miss out on Woodley

D’Qwell Jackson LB Cleveland- If we miss out on Paul, this kid has skills.

Resign
Jamall Brown
Santana Moss
Phillip Buchanon

Starting Lineup:

LT: T. Williams
LG : M Pouncey
C: Lichtensteiger
RG: M. Williams/ Hicks/ Montgomery (competition)
RT J.Brown/ R. Harris (Competition)

QB: Bulger or Smith/ Beck (comp) backup Dalton
RB: Torian, R.Williams, K. Williams (Platoon)
FB: M. Sellars * Sherman Taking over later in the year

X: S. Rice or TO backup Gates (Who decides to sign with us)
Y: A.Armstrong
Slot: S.Moss or Steve Smith backup T. Austin (Who decides to Sign with us)
TE: Cooley/ Davis

DE: Carriker
NT: P.Taylor/ Bryant/ A.Branch (competition)
DE: Golston/ Jarmon/ A.Branch (competition)

OLB: Porter or Woodley
ILB: Posluszny or Jackson
ILB: Fletcher
OLB: Rak

CB: Asomugha
CB: Hall
Slot: Buchanon
SS: Landry
FS: OJ

K: Gano
P: Bidwell or Paulescu (comp)

record:
On paper that is a strong team against a weaker schedule. So I see good things.
