Keeping Our Future Draft Picks And Drafting Wisely

With our 2011 Draft Thread set to open in the next few hours speculation will begin to subside and we can start discussing what we have as opposed to what we hope to get.

Itís pretty much an NFL truism now that good franchises draft well and bad ones donít. If youíre looking for a reason why the Redskins have perennially finished at the bottom of the division during Dan Snyderís ownership, examining our organizationís abhorrent record in the draft is a good place to start. In fact, a good case can be made that the Redskins have been the worst drafting team in the entire league going at least as far back as the past decade.

ESPN the Magazine ran an interesting set of charts in its 2011 draft preview. One of them depicted a series of graphs demonstrating the quality of each teamís drafting as judged by the number and quality of the drafted players remaining on an NFL roster (or injured reserve) for week 17 of the 2010 season. The findings have to be frustrating for Redskins fans. Only 34 players drafted by the Redskins remained in the league in 2010, the lowest number for any franchise in the NFL. Of that 34, only 23 were with the team (or were placed on our injured reserve) for week 17 of last season. That number ties for the league low with Kansas City. There are only two other franchises in our sad orbit, the aforementioned Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both teams have 36 players drafted still in the league. The Bucs have 25 remaining on their roster. After that, itís not really close as every other team in the league has at least 40 players drafted still in the league. Yes, weíve been outdrafted by the Lions. Even worse, the Redskins only drafted eight total linemen still in the league last seasonĖby far the worst record in the NFL.

Here's to hoping as we go forward [starting in 2012] the Redskins can look foreward to a full complement of draft selections and draft wisely.

We drafted decently last year.
I have a feeling we'll do well this year too
Heck...Vinny is gone and we supposedly have a real coach now, only way to go is up.

I'll be inquisitive to see whether or not any future draft picks will be incooperated in any exchanges that transpire in this draft. I'm trusting that "the future is now" has become an aborted slogan, that we begin to rely more on youth than experience.

I'm sure i might question the FO pick (if they don't find a team to trade back with) but I'm going to roll with it anyway they know what there doing. Only way to go is up though.

I've been a fan since the early 70's and I don't think I have ever seen a draft like this one in that the Skin's are actually accumulating picks rather then trading them for higher picks or veterans(good ones during the George Allen era and not so good ones since). I hope this is a full culture change in Redskins park.

Wisley is a small village in Surrey, England. It lies between Cobham and Woking. It is the home of the Royal Horticultural Society's Wisley Garden. The River Wey runs through the village.

Pretty cool how we leveraged all those extra picks simply by moving from 10 to 16 in the first round to gain that extra 2nd to play with.

If nothing else Shanahan/Allen realize that this is a team bereft of young talent at virtually every position, and a huge influx of youth is needed. All these draft picks will certainly help.

The way we've handled things thus far in the draft at the very least shows us that there are intelligent adults running the show at Redskins Park these days.
