Re: Tripoli About to be Taken Over by Rebels
Getting conflicting reports on Gaddafi so I dropped that from the title. Heard his son was captured and he was killed. Not sure now.

Re: Tripoli About to be Taken Over by Rebels
There is speculation that he may have fled to Algeria, perhaps weeks ago. Who knows, but it's looking doubtful that he's still in Tripoli.

Frying pan - fire.
Things won't be getting better any time soon but at least they have an opportunity to become a Democracy. |
Re: Tripoli About to be Taken Over by Rebels
Related oil futures trading * 1% lower. Markets seem to view Qaddafi overthrow as a positive for supply.

I heard his son surrendered during a firefight. So now I'm definitely not sure. |
Re: Tripoli About to be Taken Over by Rebels
Think I heard that one surrendered and the other was captured

Re: Tripoli About to be Taken Over by Rebels
It's about time that the regime change was completed and the bloodshed (hopefully) was finally brought to an end.

Re: Tripoli About to be Taken Over by Rebels
Yeah, but to who's benefit is Qaddafi's overthrow? The whole thing was orchestrated because Qaddafi was going to nationalize the oil completely. He gave the Libyan people a pretty good deal. A newly married couple got free housing, real cheap food prices, gas prices were ridiculously low. Free college and a car to go with it. I know the guy was a sponsor of terrorism in the 80's, but he pretty much did a 180 from that. Helped the CIA against Al Qaeda, etc. To me we have 3 possible outcomes: an Islamist state, a true pro Western democracy, or just another puppet regime of the West. In two of the 3 cases it will be bad for us. We do not need another Islamist regime so close to Europe, and if we set up a puppet regime, that will take away the freebies, you will eventually get another anti West regime change later on down the road. I can hear those crazy fools yelling "Great Satan" a few years down the road. We really should have let the Europeans handle this, and if they couldn't let them fall. NATO is of no use to the United States anymore, and is a big economic liability.

Agree, this is a lot different from what happened in Egypt. The opposition seems less organized and has shown no problem spilling blood. This could get really ugly if the UN, Italy, France etc. doesnt get a security force in there. Lotta loyalist in Tripoli and Tripoli is a big city. Gaddafi's resistence not to leave is gonna end up costing alot of lives in that country. |
