I need help settling this....

Alright, so tonight me and a few of my friends were watching the replays of the Jets/Chargers game. THen came the highlight of the 47 Yard Pennington to Moss TD pass. My one friend was like " Damn, that was one of the nicest throws I've seen all year" then my other friend was like "Hell no, that catch was a 1,000 times better." This lead to a very, very heated debate, and ussually we dont get into it like this, but three of us were saying it was all the throw and the other one was saying how much better the catch was.

What do you guys think? On the 47yrd TD Pass from Pennington to Moss, what was better the throw or the catch?

That is tricky, if I remember right wasnt there like 2 deffenders there with him?? Anyhow a question like that is like what came first the chicken or the egg!!! I mean the catch was pretty good but the ball had to get there. With out the one you dont have the other.

But I would have to go with the throw, I mean if there were 2 deffenders there Pennington had to be very percise as to where he put it so that only Moss could get it. It was great concentration on Moss's effort, but that trow had to be damn near perfect for that play.

i didn't see the play but if it was into double coverage i would say it was a better catch.

Great Catch

Two sets of footsteps, full speed over the shoulder, a classic.
Complet concentration,

Scale of 1-10

Throw 9.7

Catch 9.8

I have done both and catching a ball is far easier than throwing the ball, the QB by nature of his position made the tougher play, the only time I give the reciever the tougher catch is if he's being drilled by a saftey simultanously and he hang's on, or the QB forces him into a 1 handed grab on a unpressured throw, Pennington put that ball on the money you don't see that all that often even in the NFL, a NFL reciever should be expected to make that catch.

Moss had to slow down a bitch which means the ball was underthrown. It was by far a better catch than a throw.

I'd say it was an equally impressive play on both ends, the throw was dropped in perfectly where only Moss could make the play, and Moss had to make a tough over the shoulder catch with two guys on him showing great concentration.

If I had to go with one over the other I guess I'd go with the throw.

from the angle they showed it looked like the chargers db swatted his hand just a hair to soon or otherwise it might have been deflected but it was still a really nice pass for someone with a supposed weak arm since his injury and I don't remember the catch looking all that nice. It just looked like a catch from what I remember. Now if Moss had one or both of the dbs hanging on him then my opinion would be a little different.

WR's are expected to make the over the shoulder catch, but it's not as routine as it looks. Especially with two defenders right on your tail.

most every deep ball in the league arent perfect passes.
the receivers make adjustments to the ball so that the pass does look perfect.
all the qb does it get it in the WR's catch radius and the receiver does the real work.

the hardest part about being a QB is making the reads, the throw should be easy(it is except for brunell). pennington had an easy read once moss smoked jammer at the line.

simple throw(which was slightly underthwon). great job beating the coverage and catching the ball in bounds.

Still a chicken or the egg question...even though sometimes the balance swings 60-40 for either the quarterback or receiver.

sportscurmudgeon 01-12-2005 02:50 PM

It has to be the pass and not the catdh because "this Moss" forgot to moon the crowd after scoring. That is a mandatory three-tenths of a point deduction even if all the judges are from France. :thumb:

The throw was better
