A quick question...

...with all the talk of us loosing Smoot it got me to thinking. When was the last time we had a pair of standout CBs. We always seem to have one great CB and one either getting there or past it.

One thing I always remember about Green being here were we seemed to perpetually looking for another guy on the other corner. I rememer us having some other good guys here I just cannot remember thier names . I seem to recall Mark Mayhew but not sure if he played CB or if he was any good...also was it Chris Dishman who used to partner Green just before we drafted Bailey? Was it him who was crying in the locker room because he realised he didn't physically have it in him to play the game anymore?

Smoot and Bailey were sick last year and Springs and Smoot were sick this year. I have thought that the last 2 years we have had standout corners.

I think you mean Martin Mayhew, and yes he played CB. I think now he's like the player personnel director (or something like that) with the Lions

And yes, I think you're right about Dishman crying that he had suddenly lost it. It was kind of sad actually because he was really good when he came here but things just fell apart

That's right in 96' he was a pro bowl caliber CB. Then in 97' He sucked! I have never seen someone loose there ablitiy so fast. It was sad,for our team :banghead: and Dishman.

Well, until Mark Brunell perhaps.

Hahaha...nice one.

Dishman had one good season with us in '97, but didn't he move on somewhere else and actually play ok for a season or two?

skinsguy 01-13-2005 04:04 PM

Didn't Alvin Walton play Corner opposite of Green? Or maybe he was safety. I remember him being pretty decent.....

SmootSmack 01-13-2005 04:06 PM

Alvin Walton was a safety

Dishman I believe played a year with the Vikings and then the Chiefs after leaving Washington

Drift Reality 01-13-2005 04:08 PM

Alvin Walton was a safety. His tackling style involved sticking his head down and trying to spear the other team's players, which is probably enough to make him my favorite player in Redskins history.

Didn't Green play by himself and covered two receivers until he slowed a little in the late 90s.

god i loved alvin walton.

green and dishman made the probowl together. dishman had a good year because teams challanged him.
same mayhew. martin covered the #2 wr and got thrown on because opposing teams wouldnt challenge green.

mayhew didnt lose his ability in tampa, he was just exposed for what he is, a decent corner when he is covering a #2 wr. he was not capable of shutting down a #1 wr.

remember when larry brown of the cowboys intercepted a couple of balls in the superbowl and won MVP of the game? he went to the raiders and sucked.

how i would rank green and his teammates are as follows.

#1 dishman - a former probowler before he arrived. played great his first year in dc and made the probowl with green.

#2 barry wilburn - he had 9 interceptions that year and 2 in the superbowl.

#3 mayhew - had 7 ints in 90' season and 3 in the 91 superbowl season.
SIDE NOTE ON MAYHEW!!! when looking for his stats, i stubbled across this article about martin who is the assistant general manager in detriot and assistant vice presidant of the team. also he went back to school to get his law degree. Awesome job martin mayhew, too bad espn doesnt recognize real men like him.

#4 chump bailey - rookie year he intercepted 3 balls against arizona on a sundaynight game. my dad, brother and i drove to tempe from sandiego to watch the game, it was a great time for us.

others
tom carter was pretty good, then kinda bombed with the bears. man that guy was an amazing athlete.

alvoid mays had a great name.
aj johnson had a good rookie year.

Yeah I'm definitely happy for Mayhew. Good guy, he was a law school classmate of my brother's.

jamf, couldn't you make the argument that Larry Brown and for that matter Wilburn and even Mayhew had inflated interception numbers because of the guys playing on the opposite side-Deion and Darrell? Since no one dared challenge those guys?

Also, you forgot Vernon Dean
