What About Russ?

Lost in all the Monk HOF hoopla is the fact that another Redskin is a Hall of Fame finalist-Russ Grimm

On the one hand, he was a dominant player in the 80s-four time pro bowler, first team all-decade, 5 NFC Championship games, 4 Super Bowls, 3 Titles.

On the other hand, how do you really measure his impact? It's not like he's a RB where you can say well he rushed for X yards and scored Y touchdowns. He was a guard. And does the fact that he was part of such a formidable and famous offensive line actually hurt him? Because was he more valuable than Jacoby, May, Lachey, etc, if Grimm gets in should they all?

Personally, I'd love to see Grimm get in but I think it will it take at least a couple more tries before he's truly consider one of the top 6 candidates.

What do you guys think?

Should go in but we don't seem to be favorites on any ballot.

There's another OL on the finalist list named Bob Kuchenberg who was even better than Grimm. He's been waiting for about 20 years now. That gives you an idea of where OL fall on the HoF priroity list.

Seems Monk is our only hope right now. I am guessing Marino, Young, Thomas, Monk, and Dent. I hope Thomas makes it first time, he was a real monster.

Russ is still in the game as a coach hence he won't get in.

I think that they all should get in, I mean like you say he was part of a fomidable and famous offensive line. Just as formidable and famous as the "Mighty Steel Curtain" deffense of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 70's and look at how many deffensive players from that famous D are in the HOF.

But as SC pointed out look how long Bob Kuchenberg ben waiting to get in. O-linemen dont put themselves in the spotlight enough to make a dent in the media's eyes, even though with out the O-linemen the Young's, Marino's, and so on wouldnt be eligiable.

Offensive lineman are too often overlooked for the Hall for the "sexier" skill position players. Grimm had a stellar career but he's going to be waiting for quite a while in my opinion.

You lost me there. What exactly do you mean?

Offensive line is the position that seems to get the most credit for the Redskins under Gibbs. I would think that several of these guys like Grimm and Jacoby should eventually get in. I have to think eventually a couple hogs are going to get in. They seem to be the only chance other than Monk from the Super Bowl teams.

If you think about it, while a couple of the OL positions changed over the years of Gibbs first tenure, the 3 constants were Jacoby, Grimm, and Bostic. IMO, they should all get in eventually. Grimm gets more (national) attention now because he is having a successful coaching career and is a candidate for head coaching jobs.........And I'm assuming you just overlooked D. Green as a shoe-in for the HoF that was on 3 of the 4 SB teams. ;)

sportscurmudgeon 01-20-2005 12:22 AM

Grimm will get in eventually and so will Jacoby - but it is gonna take a while. Remember, it took 25-30 years of retirement for Bob Brown to get in and he was THE dominant left tackle of his era for about 12-14 years.

However, I suspect that Bostic is not gonna make ti simply because he was not the dominant center of his time and was probably the weakest link on many of those offensive lines. He was a very good player, but it isn't the "Hall of Very Good Players".
