1st and goal

Hopefully I wont be expunged from this website for posting a silly thread such as this... But I wanted to try and deviate from all the pessimism floating around lately and couldnt resist. What do you think about using different personel in goal line situations? (ie. the Patriots, Bucs) I think we could get creative here. Maybe using a linebacker as a reciever on a bootleg pass or handing the ball off to Cooley and let him smash his way in? What do you guys think? Maybe I've been playing too much ESPN 2K5.

Re: 1st and goal

What are thinking, running the ball or catching it. I think that we would have better chance of throwing a pass to someone. Maybe Lavar or even Sean Taylor. It has to be a sick athlete for it to really be effective. Im concerned that we dont use Clinton the way we should at the goal line. I mean, for crying out loud, someone tell Joe that this boy is an athlete, and can catch the ball too.

Re: 1st and goal

The fact that you mentioned ESPN 2K5 should ban you from this site. That's what silly. Dude, if need be, I'll refund your $20 for the game if you can muster up the other $10 to buy Madden 2005. As far as goal line personnel, I don't think it's necessary to play around with that. Especially since the offense sputters before we get into the redzone. :oink:

Re: 1st and goal

I agree Monksdown, we should throw to Clinton more. I am suggesting pass or run...Sean Taylor would be a good option, he's tall, physical and aggressive. I could see him coming down with the jump ball.

Yes, Portis can catch the ball too. But we need to work on getting him closer to the 1500 yd mark. :oink:

Re: 1st and goal

BossHog...Madden was $50 when it came out. 2K5 was the best budget game ever created, not just sports-budget game. I also favor the logistics in ESPN, instead of Madden where you can drop back 40 feet from the pocket and throw an 85 yard touchdown. That's silly.

I can see him getting knocked on his ass as soon as the ball is snapped. I just love you 'all-pro' gamers! That like having Dante Culpepper returning punts and kickoffs (I know you use Randy Moss because I've sent him out on a stretcher many times). I don't care how big, strong, and fast his is unconventional thinking isn't always smart. :oink:

Re: 1st and goal

I'd like to see Taylor at running back on the rare occassion.

Honestly - I'd just be happy if we didn't run it up the middle three times on goal line situations.

No offense. Literally. Seriously though. You can cop Madden now for under $35. And yes 2K5 is a quality game and thus a steal. It's like opting for generic prescription drugs or store brand can goods. It's up to you. :oink:

Who- Sean? Are you kidding. He's 6'3 230 lbs and he's faster than 98% of the linebackers in the entire league. Im not saying he should run the ball. He is most definitely not an elusive runner. but he is a ball hog when it's in the air. He's built like a small recieving tight end, but faster than any of them.

Re: 1st and goal

BossHog...how did you go from Taylor catching a first and goal pass to Daunte Culpepper returning punts? I started this thread for some positive feedback, not to upset you "serious gamers".

BossHog 02-23-2005 03:29 PM

Re: 1st and goal

And his hands are better than 98% of WRs and TEs in the league right? No coach in the history of the NFL would entertain this nonsense. :oink:

The only coaches that would entertain this "nonsense" win superbowls. Like Chicago with the fridge. Tampa Bay with Sapp. And oh yeah, didnt a defensive player score a touchdown on offense this super bowl. And wasn't the game only won by 3 points. Good try.

And im sure that the two of you would turn around that storied franchise with your conservative offense.

I got it from Letterman's Top 10 list of ways to lose your job as a NFL head coach.

10. Fail to adjust the the 'new' NFL.
9. Fall in love with a washed up QB and sign him to a 'in the prime of his career' contract. Then he's benched.
8. Switch to a rookie QB after the veteran started off the season with a 5-0 record.
7. Sign players that played for you in college.
6. Employ the Fun 'n Gun offense
5. Bring in Vinny Testerverde as your starting QB.
4. Bring in Drew Bledsoe as your starting QB after bringing in Testerverde the year before.
3. Have Dante Culpepper as a PR/KR specialist.
2. Use Sean Taylor on offense in goal line situations.
1. Draw up your real life NFL playbook according to what happens in a videogame.

Hey Bosshog, check out this Sportsline's rankings on linebacker's right now. It's very odd where they put Antonio. Sorry Matty, this may bog the server a bit.

Re: 1st and goal

I think this is a great question, somthing all my buddies and I talk about during the season. We need a smashmouth fullback, halfback ala Sam Bam Cunningham. Bettis would work but I think he will be resigned in the offseason by the Steel boys. Need a guy that is use to holding the ball as a fumble could be real pivotal. Thats why they throw to most of these guys so that they risk of losing the ball is taken away. This is Buges and the boys and smashmouth is there game. Good motivation for the O line to move 2-3 yards.

The guy from West Virginia comes to mind except I forgot his name. Big and strong and would fit the bill perfectly

Re: 1st and goal
The only coaches that would entertain this "nonsense" win superbowls. Like Chicago with the fridge. Tampa Bay with Sapp. And oh yeah, didnt a defensive player score a touchdown on offense this super bowl. And wasn't the game only won by 3 points. Good try.
The Fridge, Warren Sapp, and Vrabel weren't 6'3 230lbs and ran a sub 4.40. Now could you have any of these guys man up on a WR? That's what at stake here. A football player is a football player and the line of what positions are played is blurred often. When and where you draw the line is pretty obvious? :oink:

Re: 1st and goal

Are you sure that the fridge wasnt 230 lbs? No listen, im not totally quacked out of my mind. I just like the idea of throwing in some wrinkles in the red zone, whatever they may be. I would prefer to use offensive talent, but where is that talent? Cooley? I think it's time we looked into a tight end. I hear uva has a good one coming out this year. Is it Heath something or other?
Hey Bosshog, check out this Sportsline's rankings on linebacker's right now. It's very odd where they put Antonio...
What's odd about that? Washington and Pierce are our best overall LBs on our team. Arrington is undoubtedly the most athletic. Pierce excels with vocal leadership and Washington rarely gets beat and never freelances. :oink:

Im just interested to see all of the hype surrounding lb's way beneath him. And it gets me concerned that we are not more willing to sign him. I wonder what he is asking for?

You're not saying Cooley isn't offensive talent. Cooley should've been a pro bowl alternate. Don't imply that I'm saying that he was the 'best' TE last year. But his numbers are more than respectable. Heath Miller from UVA would be a great pick at #9 for us only if other WRs we have high on our list are gone and the rest are 'ranked' no higher than Miller. :oink:

Monksdown 02-23-2005 04:25 PM

Re: 1st and goal

Cooley is one option for the redzone. But he didnt help us much getting there. And yeah, you are right about Wide out being more pressing right now than TE. I guess lets worry about getting in the red zone first, right?

Re: 1st and goal

The kid from WVU is Kay Jay Harris...

A great fit through the draft is Eric Shelton from Louisville, although he would only be available possibly in the 3rd. Hes 250 lbs. and he actually is pretty damn quick for that size.

A later round possibility is a guy named Brandon Jacobs from Southern Illinois. He doesnt get much pub b/c he is from a I-AA school, but he started off at Auburn behind Cadillac and Ronnie Brown. He's very similar to Shelton, except he has showed impressive speed, and would be a great steal in the 4th IMO.

We could also look at Jonathan Wells from the Texans in FA. He is another big ol' back with some pop when he runs. He is a RFA, and would require a 4th rounder from us, but it would possibly be worth it. I don't know if he would want to sign just to be a goal-line back, however.

Heath Miller is a good player, but not at number 9. If we traded down into the late teens, then I could see possibly drafting him, but he just isnt worth that pick. I know that 9 would at least be the 2nd highest recently that a TE has been drafted (Winslow) and he isnt in that same league. He's not a very good blocker and he lacks the speed to be truly dominant as a receiver (a la Gonzalez, Heap, Shockey to an extent). He is a nice pickup, but not in the top 10.

Also, what's wrong with Robert Royal? I mean I understand that he hasnt really played a major role in helping us to "matriculate the ball down the field" but he has been more than solid in the red zone, which I thought was the topic at hand. He had 4 TDs toward the end of the year, and showed some good hands and some determination in getting to the end zone.

This is, of course, where a guy like Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards is so important. Against a smashmouth running team like us, teams will stack the box with 9 at the goal line and leave corners on an island. There is really only one corner in the league, Mathis from the Jaguars, who I would think even stands a chance in a jump-ball with Big Mike, and thats only because hes 6'4" and has really solid ball skills.

Our red zone play calling was TERRIBLE.....I'd like to see anything that would help us get the ball in the end zone more.....running through the middle 3 times in a row just didn't do it..............

Re: 1st and goal

I'm just going to try and keep my mouth shut. I'm not feeling the "sky is falling" quite yet, but I'm still optimistic going into next year.

Yes, I'm pissed about Coles and others on the team, but maybe we're trimming the cancer from the team and showing the players who they PLAY for and that we won't deal with prima donna bullshit.

Also, about Clinton Portis... if we would throw him the ball more he would be like a GOOD version of Brian Westbrook.
