Pierce offically gone

So now that Pierce is gone for sure what are we going to do? I think we hope Barrow is healthy enough to play. After an entire year off if he can;t play now he should just retire anyway. Also Clifton Smith Could step in if Barrow is still having problems. I have faith in Smith and if he is healthy I think he will do a great job in the middle. I wouldn't be suprised if we make a run at Hartwell, Bell, or even Rob Morris depending on their asking price. All I know is Ahmad Brooks is our guy in the 2006 draft!!!!!! |
Re: Pierce offically gone
How about Derrick Johnson in the draft. The guy is a monster and unless we're gtting a top flight WR (which may be gone) it wouldn't be too bad to pick up the best college LB in the country.
|
Re: Pierce offically gone
That article doesn't say he's officially gone. it says he is expected to sign today just like all the other articles today have said. I think we need to come to terms with the fact that he will sign it, but as of now he has not signed it.
I hope we will find out if we were ever given an opportunity to match like Pierce said he would last week... |
Re: Pierce offically gone
We have so much depth at linebacker it's ridiculous. DJ is a great LB, but we need to go WR.

Re: Pierce offically gone
I wont say he's 'officially' gone because he hasn't signed yet. When a story is written that the Redskins have declined to 'match' offers with the UFA. I think Pierce was more valuable than Smoot partly because of the talent pool of free agents. And there's hope that Smoot will take the offer we have on the table because of the Anthony Henry contract signing. :oink:

Derrick Johnson is going to be amazing but he is an OLB. NEXT year Ahmad Brooks will be in the draft....he will be our man.

I'm assuming Brooks plays for...PSU? MLB, OLB, ILB, tweener. Greg Williams will plug the right guy in just as he did Pierce. Hopefully, it's Pierce after all is said and signed. :oink: |

In the 2006 draft we will have the 32nd pick so it might be hard to pick him up. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
He decided to stay. Blackstock is going to be a beast. Hopefully not for the COWBOYS!!!!!! It would be nice to have that problem of having the 32nd pick, in that case i guess we would have to make some trades up!!
We have so much depth at linebacker it's ridiculous. DJ is a great LB, but we need to go WR.
So true Daseal. We have plenty of LBs, and it seems like Williams can pretty much plug in anyone and the defense won't miss a beat. WR all the way. Williams, Williamson..... |
Re: Pierce offically gone
We have so much depth at linebacker it's ridiculous. DJ is a great LB, but we need to go WR.
Exactly what I'm saying... This might be more of a blessing than anyone realized. He might go to New York and be a bust after signing that huge contract. With all this depth, especially with LaVar coming back this year, we will be just fine at the position. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
We have so much depth at linebacker it's ridiculous. DJ is a great LB, but we need to go WR.
I disagree, we should never draft for need in the first couple of rounds. The last few times we drafted a WR in the first round because we needed one, we ended with Desmond Howard (crap) and Michael Westbrook (bad knee). For those of you who do not know who Derrick Johnson is, he is 6'-4" 230 pound monster of a LB. An aggressive, speedy and explosive linebacker, some of his combine numbers were tops ever measured for a LB. I think his shuttle run time is the fastest... He earned the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player and the Butkus Award (nation’s top LB) ... was a finalist for the Bednarik Award (nation’s top defensive player), the Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman) and the Lott Trophy (defensive player of the year) in 2004 … was the only defensive player among the 10 finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. Getting FS Sean Taylor last year and if we could get Dj this year, our defense would be great. You can get a WR anywhere. They are always cap casualties. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
I wouldn't say we were that deep at LB. We have Lavar, Barrow (still hurt), Washington, Marshall, Clemons (pass rusher) then who...? So, right now it's Lavar, Washington and Marshall and not much depth behind that. If a top tier receiver is not available at 9 then why not go for the best athlete that can help the team? Edwards and Williams are going to be gone by the 9th pick. Do we want another Rod Gardner (average WR picked in the first round) or do we pick the strongest player and then pickup another average WR in the 2nd?
|
Re: Pierce offically gone
i'd like to see the skins match justs to keep him from the gints... the contract sounds like its extremely backloaded, and the bonus is small, so we could eep him for 2-3 at a fairly cheap rate and then make a call. Pierce's main strength is his intelligence, so its hard for me to see him as struggling in anyone's defense (though the gints D will still probably suck, he most definately will NOT be the reason).

I hear what you're saying but at this time last year how many people would have truthfully talked about Marshall and Clemons when talking about our LB depth? So maybe now someone like Brandon Barnes or Khary Campbell will step up. |

...or Clifton Smith, who has been mentioned a few times as an up and coming player that the coaches like...and he's more of a natural MLB. I have to say that I am dissappointed they let him get away, but not worried....I'm sure Williams is in Gibbs' ear as far as defensive players go, and if he felt that Pierce was really that vital to our success, they would have done what was needed to keep him. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
The name I keep hearing is Clifton Smith. A lot of people really think this guy can play, based mostly on his success in college, but apparently he was a real stud. He may become Antonio Pierce Part 2 next year as the guy who kind of emerges from the shadows to play great. I kind of doubt it, however, since Pierce's success stemmed mostly from the fact that he is so smart, not from his physical prowess. But I hold out hope.

Hopefully not overspend on Rolle. Maybe up our bid for Smoot? Let's take a look at RFAs. Shall we? :oink: |
Re: Pierce offically gone
if campbell had stepped up last season, pierce would still be on the bench (campbell started ahead of him on all the depth charts).
|
Re: Pierce offically gone
This is basically three guys (Coles,Smoot,Pierce) who seemed to be "true" Redskins that are up and running. Two are for money and one because of...well who the hell really knows. I don't begrudge Smoot and Coles for capitalizing on their chance to cash in but I am sick and tired of guys talking about how "they want to be in DC" and how "it will be hard to leave" when it is obvious that they don't really care where they play as long as they get paid. Pisses me off that these chumps can't just be honest and say "I'll play where they pay me". As for Coles...whatever.

Khary Campbell? You sure about that? |
Re: Pierce offically gone
Here's a thought: why not keep Washington and LeMar Marshall at OLB and move Arrington inside? Arrington's at his best in space, and he sure has the size and speed to play the position.
|
Re: Pierce offically gone

i believe so, in training camp last preseason he was displaced as the backup MLB by pierce a couple weeks in... i believe some people here asked what was up with that too... |

NOOOOO LaVar needs to stay outside. It would be a waste of his ability to mow him inside. |

I don't really like that, arrington free lances a bit too much as it is, last thing he needs is to be responsible for positioning 10 other guys as well as playing his own assignment. He's a freak athlete, but not the top choice for QB'ing the D, since he sometimes has trouble keeping himself in the right spot. |

Playing inside affords him LESS space than playing outside. You've provided the main reason why NOT to move him inside. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
MLB doesn't HAVE to QB the D. It can be anyone. Safeties do it a lot, unfortunately I'm not sure we have anyone at safety capable of doing that. Maybe Taylor, I don't know.
Definitely don't move Arrington inside. Let him be a threat to rush the passer from the outside and use his ability. If we HAD to move one of them in I think Washington would be a better fit. I really want to keep those guys on the outside. We need to keep Clemons for 3rd downs to take LaVars spot at LB when he goes to DE. We should look at playing Marshall in the middle. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
I'm very dissapointed by this. I think we will be able to surive fairly well without him, but man I really liked Perice. Rumor has it that he gave us the chance to match the offer, so that was very stand-up in my opinion, keeping his world. I'll deifintley be cheering for this guy in the future; and I'll miss him here.
|
Re: Pierce offically gone
Well, as much as I hoped Pierce would have stayed and although there is a SLIM chance of him staying, I don't think we're in trouble over that one. I am wondering about Fred Smoot...anything official yet?
I think we need to center our concentration toward Wide Receiver. |
Re: Pierce offically gone
Well the only real concentration it seems we can have NOW is getting one from the draft.
|
Re: Pierce offically gone
I didn't read the entire thread so forgive me if someone else already stated this. Yes it sucks that Pierce is gone, but let's not act like we just lost Mike Singletary.
He was very good last year.. for the first time in his short career.. on a 6-10 team.. that caused very few turnovers.. that had a great defense statistically but didn't turn games around like elite defenses do.. All the gloom and doom is a bit much on the board as well as the local media.. Pierce had a great year, but as Ryan Clark, Garnell Wilds, Lemar Marshall, Chris Clemmons, Joe Saleva'a, ANTONIO PIERCE all showed, the defense we run is predicated on the scheme and players being where they were supposed to be.. Pierce made a ton of tackles, but he wasn't a game changer.. It would be nice to have him back for continuity sake, but it's not the end of the world he left.. |

The other player I hear William's likes is Barnes, at 6'2" and 247 he is very fast he was a WR his sophmore year at missouri, he didn't move to LB until his junior year, [I read somewhere but can't find it] that William's really likes this kid. If none of these guy's pan out I am sure we will have no prob. finding a MLB as good or better than Pierce in the draft, plus we do still have Barrow who I believe will be ready to go this season to hold down the fort until 1 of the youngster's are ready to step up. I would not be panicking right now about the MLB position WE WILL BE FINE! |
Re: Pierce offically gone
Daseal I also like your idea of putting Lavar at D-end and then putting Clemon's outside of Lavar on Passing down's that's a big time pass alignment it's exactly how they should be used I don't think that combo can be stopped.
