Thanks Smootsmack!

Thanks man! Now I will feel so dumb, at least for then next couple of minutes or so.

sportscurmudgeon 03-24-2004 04:26 PM

There once was a QB who took the Wonderlic and scored "in the single digits" With that kind of score, psychologists would be looking for polite ways to say he was "dumb as a fence post". His agent claimed he was distracted and got him to take another test whereupon he scored in the "upper teens". That makes him much smarter than a fence post but still not someone who would ever be confused with a MENSA member.

The Wonderlic purports to be an IQ test which measures learning capacity and innate intelligence. For a QB, you probably want a guy who is smart to begin with and has some learning capacity, no?

Well our subject was a first round pick due to his athleticism but he just could not seem to "grasp" the new offense. So they watered it down for him. Still too complex so they watered it down some more. By that time, the defensive coordinators around the league seemed to know the play about to be run before the offensive line was set. Being a first round QB, our hero got a bonus and therefore had to stay with the team for a couple of years to amortize the cap hit. Then, he was cut.

Moral of the story: It takes more than just brawn to play NFL football...

Daseal 03-24-2004 04:36 PM

What's the highest possible score? 30?

saden1 03-24-2004 04:37 PM

Seems like Winslow is quite smart for a loud mouth :P

sportscurmudgeon 03-24-2004 04:40 PM

I BELIEVE that the highest possible score is something like 44 which would translate to an IQ of about 230. Don't hold me to those numbers exactly because it has been about 10 years since I did any reading about the basis of the Wonderlic and its scoring.

I read somewhere that the lowest Wonderlic score ever recorded for an NFL player was 6. I do recall that according to the people who devised the test, that means that this person would need to be taught to tie his shoes about three times a week.

Ghost 03-24-2004 05:16 PM

Does anyone else think it's odd that just about every QB on that list scored an even 25.00?

SmootSmack 03-24-2004 05:24 PM

Here are scores of some NFL QBs....Griese 39 and Favre 22!

:laughing- Are you being facetious, saden? I think the last figure on each row is the average score for the players at that position. It certainly would be improbable that all the players at the same position scored exactly the same.

It is funny though, that tight ends posted the highest average score. I never thought of tight ends as being the brightest of the bunch. Who woulda thunk it? I guess when you consider how versatile a tight end has to be, it makes sense that they would be mentally dexterous as well.
What is this thing anyways? I'm lost
It's similar to an IQ test, it's a "mental agility" test that all potential draftees are given.
What is this thing anyways? I'm lost
way for the NFL gm's to see what your working with upstairs.

JWsleep 03-24-2004 07:50 PM

Is there any indication AT ALL that this tracks how good a QB a player will be? If IQ tests are suspect in other fields, why would they work in the NFL? IQ tests show how good you are at taking IQ tests. That's about it... (See Steven J. Gould's book "The Mismeasure of Man.") :twocents:

Well I used to play TE and I'm pretty damn smart....

Course I've also played QB, S, CB, WR and LB, so who knows.... :D

yeah, I was. Just trying to be cheeky.

Windslow obviously did the scientifically proven method that works and picked "C" every time.
