Redskins acquire tight end Derek Carrier from 49ers
The Washington Redskins attempted to fill a glaring hole Friday by acquiring tight end Derek Carrier from the San Francisco 49ers.
The Redskins will send a fifth-round pick to the 49ers, according to a source. The Redskins lost their starting tight end, Niles Paul, to a season-ending ankle injury in their preseason opener Aug. 13. Backup Logan Paulsen also is lost for the year with a toe injury, and their top pass catcher at the position, Jordan Reed, has durability issues, having missed a combined 12 games his first two years with injuries. Carrier is a former college receiver at Division III Beloit and spent two years on practice squads before sticking with San Francisco. He caught nine passes for 105 yards last season and is considered more of a pass catcher than a blocker. He can also help on special teams. Carrier is the third tight end acquired by Washington in the last week. The Redskins also could use offensive lineman Tom Compton as a tight end in some packages. Its McC resume that justifies the trade. I like it, from what I read on 49ers blog, they were hoping other TE were gonna be traded and not carrier |
Re: Redskins acquire tight end Derek Carrier from 49ers
he's got a 3 year deal and they kind of wanted to keep him, but if you've got 2-3 guys that are pretty equal and someone makes an offer for one of them, option 2b + a 5th is better than 2a i guess. i'm just speculating - I don't know the 49ers TEs for ish.

Niners fans like him, don't like seeing him go, still young with good upside.

We're over a barrel. We paid a bit of a premium but that's what happens when you're only reliable TE is out for the year, your other usable TE is a china doll, and the rest are rookie camp fodder. We couldn't go into the season with JReed and a bunch of guys plus Tom "not actually a TE" Compton. |

It's a conditional pick. And only in 2017 -- because the 49ers already had a bunch of picks next year. I'm okay with this.. He's young, relatively inexpensive and has potential. Could help w receiving and blocking, we'll see this weekend, could develop into a bigger Niles Paul.
And I think Carrier himself said he "picked up" a #41 jersey because it was available. But I'd bet he was trying to be politically correct. |
