The Wuerffel: Represent DW!!

(from the Miami Herald)

Here's the Wuerffel

The Heisman gets all the attention. Then there's the Outland, the Lombardi, the Nagurski, the Maxwell, the Butkus . . .

And, now, the Wuerffel.

Danny Wuerffel is the newest namesake on college football's crowded shelf of postseason hardware. The Wuerffel Trophy will honor the player who best combines academics and community service with on-field distinction.

''I just really feel humbled that my name will be attached to this,'' the record-setting UF passer said in an announcement from his hometown of Fort Walton Beach.

``Secondly, I'm very excited that there is an award to honor those who excel at more than just sports and academics.''

Wuerffel led the Gators to the 1996 national title, earning Heisman honors along the way. He also won the Draddy Award, given by the National Football Foundation to the nation's top football scholar-athlete.

He is the only player ever to claim the Heisman-Draddy double.

Now living in New Orleans, Wuerffel retired after eight NFL seasons and has been recognized for his community service with Desire Street Ministries there.

I just wish he was a little bit taller and a bit stronger in the arm. It would have been nice if he could read defenses too.

I think in general, it would have been really cool if Spurrier wasnt a jackass, and had to torture us with him. I played tackle football against qb's when i was 12 that had stronger arms.

haha. i can't believe they are even naming an award after this guy. this guy doesn't deserve nothing after the way he wasted the skins time during his years in the pros. what he actually deserves is an ass kicking for being a college football star, only to be a bust when it comes to the real league.

Hey, it coulda been worse. We coulda paid Danny a ton of money, but I think for the price we really didn't lose anything. The guy at least said no when Spurrier asked him back because he knew he didn't have it anymore.

I always wonder how much of a person's success has to do with them and how much of it relies on the team in the NFL. I seriously doubt many of the star players today would be stars had they come into the league under different circumstances.

I'll give Wuerffel credit for being a decent character off the field. At least he didn't foul things up the way Sean Taylor has. Even though he didn't show us anything special in D. C., his achievements in college make that award worthwhile.

Boy tough crowd

But I agree Jermus22 you have to admire Danny's character and doing something POSITIVE for his community..........

Now Trent Green gee, if we only had kept him at QB................

You're absolutely right. What kind of jackass says no to a multi-year million dollar contract (which we offered him) so he can run a ministry?!?! This guy is "Lord of the Scumbags".
