Another Safety?

So the Redskins have signed Omar Stoutmire

I thought we already had quite a logjam there in the defensive backfield

Another Walt Harris type project?

i posted this on the thread about our roster but most of you prbly wont see that and it seems relevant here too.

As far as our defense goes, I understand what you guys are talking about that Williams likes a lot of LBs since they play a huge role in his schemes. However, I think that DBs are the most important part of our D. Without great coverage downfield, GW would not be able to blitz our LBs and develop all the creative plays in his playbook. Since we really dont have that elite pass rusher on the D-line, we need our corners and safetys to cover opposing receivers for a long period of time (which happened a lot last year when we got sacks after 5 or 6 seconds). Not only are DBs important in terms of being able to cover receivers, but GW loves blitzing them as well. Remember, Springs led our team in sacks and Bowen picked up 2 in his only game played. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I could see us keeping 9 or 10 backs and maybe 6 LBs or so (our LB corps is very deep so the 6 that make it will be more than capable) as opposed to 8 DBs and 9 or 10 LBs.

I like this pickup. He is a real solid player. The more competition the better in my opinion. Maybe Bowen and Lott aren't as healthy as we thought.

Re: Another Safety?

He's decent, but not an improvement over Bowen, Clark et al. Nevertheless, he gives us even more depth at DB.

Re: Another Safety?

he doesnt get ints! started all 16 games 4 straight seasons with the giants with 1 int...i remember this guy being a slightly above average player, but who knows. more competition at the least

Re: Another Safety?

i think they are just bringing him in to give him a chance at resurrecting his career. i doubt he will have a huge impact.

Re: Another Safety?

I doubt he'll even make the final roster. Seems like just another training camp body to me.

I hope so. Harris was outstanding last year when Smoot was out.

More is better for the competition. This way you will know the best for the starting unit and then the backups.
