Wide Receivers...
 

As many of us here, I am glad that we now have a down field threat in Mr. Moss. I, also, like other question if Brunell and Moss can hook up like that on somewhat of a habitual basis.

I think that we need to have either Patten or Jacobs(if he is healthy) to step up. If they can not then teams will still stack the box to take Portis out of the game and double up on Moss knowing that our other receivers are not going to hurt them deep...

I hope this sunday that Patten or Jacobs catch a few deep balls just to solidify that our receivers will now have to be accounted for when Deffense coordinators are game planning for us...

Cooley, Patten, Jacobs and Thrash all need to become threats in their own rights. Cooley, in particular, is the key to opening things up in the passing game. I'd also like to see Portis catching more passes out of the backfield.

If they double moss it will open stuff up underneath. It is just that they might stack the box and worry just about moss after that, but it is hard to double a player, it takes away from a defense. If moss is doubled then Patten and Taylor will get more shots. Which will give us enough respect that teams might actually back off the line so portis can get a couple easy yards,

I'm happy with Moss being the only 'threat' going into wk4. Gibbs has seen the promised land. Ofcourse we'll run Portis, but I'll take dumps to Thrash and Cooley and slants to Patten over anyone being considered a 'threat'. Double team Moss and our smart 35 yr old will find the open guy. Don't forget that Portis becomes much more of a passing threat since Moss shined against the Cowboys. As in poker anything is possible with the Redskins and atleat until now Gibbs holds the cards. He's smarter than most think...

I don't think we need 70 yard strikes to get the safties out of the box, I think about 3 plays of 20-25 yds out of the passing game will suffice.. I think Brunell will be able to get out of the pocket and make some plays in the passing game down the field to Cooley and Royal against Seattle that he wasn't able to do against Dallas because of the Cowboys speed and discipline.. Effectiveness down the field will do the trick, but at least a willingness to go down the field should open things up for Portis..

While were on the subject of WR's. It great to have Thrash back making every catch that comes his way. I can't remember the last time that Thrash droped a ball. I know he will never be a 1,000 yard WR but he never seems to miss a ball that should be catch.

Good point. With all of the focus directed at Moss, Thrash was able to catch the ball in the flat for 20yds. against Dallas with no problem. Dallas wanted to keep Cooley and Portis out of the endzone and they didn't consider Moss a threat at all.

Thrash is the dark horse. He is quick, strong and resilient. If teams double Moss, that leaves vets like Thrash and Patten open and we have yet to see Jacobs emerge. We are going to have a much improved passing game. Remember...it is only our third game coming up and we changed QBs between weeks one and two. With some consistency the offense will improve.

I am. I would really like to see how he can perform when he's 100%. Hopefully he'll get some more balls thrown his way soon. He needs to step up.

I have to though, he made about 4-5 moves trying to get an extra half a yard when he caught a pass against Dallas.

I think the kid has some moves, I just want to start seeing them.

I totally agree. If Cooley steps it up, we should have a running game and a passing attack on both a short and deep level.

DISCLAIMER: I don't want to rehash the Brunell-Ramsey debate, but does anyone think that Brunell hasn't developed the chemistry with Cooley that Ramsey had? Ramsey looked to Cooley an awful lot and it seems like Cooley has been pretty quiet. Maybe things will turn around after a few weeks, but I'd like to see Cooley more involved in the offense's short-intermediate passing attack.
