Who needs to step up?
While I am still happy with the start of the season (but disappointed the last 2 weeks) there are a couple people I'd like to see bring their game a little more..
-Taylor Jacobs: To quote the Boost Mobile commercials, 'Where You At?' I expected Jacobs to have some kind of an impact this season but for some reason he is still the #4 receiver. He is rapidly earning the bust label that he has been avoiding because of injuries.. -David Patten: Moss has been amazing, but at some point he is going to see double coverage all game (probably next week) so Patten needs to get deep and make a play to show defenses that they have to be honest. -Sean Taylor: Not really complaining about him, he's been solid, but he wasn't drafted to be solid, he was drafted to be a game changer. He's supposed to be Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, Ed Reed, making plays on the ball, causing fumbles, crushing WR and tight ends, blitzing and terrorizing QB.. Once Springs, Rogers and Harris are all in the game and healthy let's see if he is let loose some more. -Whoever is calling the plays: When I can sit on my couch and predict the plays in the redzone, surely an NFL DC can predict the same thing.. Let's see some stretch running plays, that 2 point conversion play was a good one, let's see some more imagination in the red zone.. |
Re: Who needs to step up?
Portis. He's gotta find a way to get into the end zone.

Re: Who needs to step up?
the o line, specificly dockery rabach and thomas.just once i would like to see portis run a play without stumbling. i mean what is up with that?

Re: Who needs to step up?
I'm going to say that the mental errors just need to stop. When you have statistical dominance it only says that turnovers are causing the problem. Our turnovers are giving huge momentum swings to teams at HOME. That AIN'T good.
Our offense is playing great and our defense DOES give up the occassional big play, but otherwise is playing pretty well too. In one word: turnovers. They are what we are living and dying by these days. |

I agree and mentioned that during the game in the chat room about him stumbling and having trouble keeping his feet under him. Maybe he is just trying to hard and getting ahead of himself with momentum. I expect him in open field to make solid cuts and take it to the house. I would say 80% of the plays he has gained good yardage on has had a stumble involved or losing his feet. Love Portis but what gives? |
Re: Who needs to step up?
I think Sean Taylor is fine... he's caused a couple forced fumbles and been solid in coverage. Our defensive ends are the ones who need to really step it up though.

Re: Who needs to step up?
I say we need someone on D to make some plays. I realy don't care who it is we just need some turnovers and some game changing plays from our D.
-Taylor Jacobs: To quote the Boost Mobile commercials, 'Where You At?'
yeah, the only time I remember seeing him yesterday was when he was running down the field next to Moss on the big screen play. I think with Jacobs it's mainly been the fact that Gibbs has been using a max protect scheme about 90-95% of the time and only having one or 2 wrs out on the field and Gibbs would prefer to have Moss or Patten out there in those situations. I think Portis needs to step up. Like a couple others have mentioned, there have been quite a few times this year where his body seemed to get ahead of his feet and he trips himself when there have been holes. And he still needs to work on his patience, because he's been running by his blocks before they fully develop way too often. He's doing decent on yards, but he'd be close to his old self if he was able to control that. And as I mentioned in another thread, please please please stop calling for these pathetic runs up the middle that portis never seems to get more than a yard or 2 on and have him swing to the outside or something to that extent to utilize his speed and shiftiness. I think the turnovers will come as they've been just a hair out of place at times and like Greg Willaims says, they come in spurts and this weekend against a rookie qb who has a QB rating of 12.5. |
Re: Who needs to step up?
The offensive coaching staff needs to step it up. Seems to me that they are not making the proper adjustments at halftime to keep the other defense guessing. Brunell has been hot 2 weeks in a row, only to cool in the 2nd half when needed most.
Portis needs to be utilized better. More outside the tackle runs. Patten has been a good compliment to Moss, and I don't think he needs to step it up. Brunell has gotten quite comfortable with Moss and Cooley, and as long as Patten makes the catches that come his way, he'll be fine. Our defensive line is solid, but needs to be more disruptive. If LaVar would be placed on the DLine just for 3rd downs, other teams would have to totally readjust to make sure he's taken care of, which would open the door for others to get the QB. The biggest thing is besides Griffin, no one is really getting double teamed on the line. The turnovers will come... |
Re: Who needs to step up?
Cornerbacks. all of them.
Springs needs to play. he almost worked off that injury prone tag but i guess its back. Rogers needs to actually cover the WR instead of "manage" his position. he is simply keeping the WR infront of him. jimoh needs to play more consistent. i like his aggressiveness, he is actually playing the WR. GW: he needs to not be so passive defensively. the defence is waiting in coverage for plays to happen. thats why we dont have turn overs. we need to create instead of wait. Sean Taylor Is too good to only play in coverage. let him play at the line. the Oline needs to step it up, they do ok on passblocking plays(not yesterday), they need to play with anger and try to kill people on running plays. |

Who needs to step up?
How about Renaldo Wynn and Philip Daniels? Check these numbers: ZERO sacks in 5 games. That's it. Those are their numbers. It's getting pretty interesting when we keep hearing the coaches say that Lavar Arrington isn't playing because he doesn't "follow the system" yet, Wynn and Daniels get absolutely no criticism for their pathetic pass rushing capabilities, and they never lose their starting status. Are they following the system? |

on that play did u see how fast jacobs was....he was keeping right up with moss and passing all the defensive players...he should be on the field more |
Re: Who needs to step up?
oline, very much including Jansen and Samuels. a 2nd year guy made utter fools of them Sunday, and anyone who said Portis needs to step up can just look straight at the entire oline for the lack of big running production.
dline, i'm starting to think the reason our running defense was so good is because they stay right where they are. save Griffin, they hardly ever go into the backfield for the remote possibility of creating a pass rush. well, teams have figured out to beat that, run AROUND them to the outside. and it's what beat us these last two games (i'm including that Holmes screen pass). everyone on the D needs to revisit tackling, they magically forgot how when they were all so good before. |
Re: Who needs to step up?
Honestly I think Portis needs some better rushing numbers. However, I only blame him 50% for those numbers, because I really think we are using him the wrong way and we havent had great run-blocking. I'd like to see the rushing attack improve.
Defensive line REALLY needs to improve, but I didnt really expect a ton out of them anyways. |

Especially in the red zone. Everyone is in the box, so we should just run him to the outside. He has the speed to turn the corner. Defensively all around we need to step up, but one thing that does stick out is shitty tackling. Did you guys see Trent Green look like M.Vick on that one play where like 5 defenders couldn't get him down? Thats ridiculous. |
