Gibbs coach of the year?

I think this is something we really haven't discussed yet, and I know it's something that hasn't even crossed my mind until today.

I was listening to the Sports Bash on ESPN radio on my way home today and Mark Schlereth was a guest, both he and Erik Kuselias agreed that right now Gibbs is the coach of the year in the NFL.

I was like wow, I guess he really is!

Could you imagine, what an incredible comeback it would be! Of course another SB win would be the ultimate achievement for this coach that was left for dead by the majority of the media last year, but coach of the year honors should would be a hell of an accomplishment!

I agree, he was left for dead by the media...hell some of our "so called" fans did. Coach of the year is a reality especially based on the Ramsey/Brunell decision, with all the critcs against it.

Right now - absolutely. However, anything short of a 10 win season and the playoffs, and he gives that accolade away. My $.02, anyway.

I honestly believe even if I wasn't a Skins fan, Gibbs would get my vote cuz no one else has had their team made as huge of a reversal from the previous season especially given the fact that everyone and their mom was saying the game had passed Gibbs by. the only other legimate choice I can think of would be Marvin Lewis.

The Skins have to make the playoffs for Joe to win it. But I think that will happen.

I agree that Gibbs should be near the top of the list, but i dont believe he is the only serious conteder at this point. Marvin Lewis of the Bengals has done something that no coach in the past 20 some odd years has done. He has made them a contender. We all know Gibbs is a fantastic coach, one of the best of all time, but Lewis is new on the head coaching scene. Depending on where the two teams end up come January, I think it is a toss up.

Re: Gibbs coach of the year?

I understand why people are talking about M. Lewis also being mentioned for C.O.Y. but in no way did he do what Gibbs has done. And I am not talking about Gibbs past achievements.

If you look at the Bengals when Lewis took over, they finished 8-8 his first year, and then 8-8 his second year. They would stumble in the first 8 weeks of the season and then finish strong the last 8 weeks. This year they finally came out strong in the first 8 weeks of the season. Also it has taken Lewis 3 years to accomplish this.

If you look at Gibbs, and mind you the past is the past, he took one of the worst offenses in the league and has them ranked 2 overall. He stuck his own neck out and his reputation all on a so-called "washed up" Mark Brunell. But that is what great coaches do, they get there team to play all the time.

Yeah, Lewis is doing a great job in Cincy but again if you look they were right in the playoff race every year that he was there head coach.

My opinion is that Gibbs has done more in the 1 than what Lewis has done so far after his 2 years asa HC.

Just my thoughts...

Playoffs and he is coach of the year....if he wins the Superbowl, then the Trophy name change from the Lambardi Trophy to the Gibbs Trophy.....probably pass Lambardi in Greatness

It's a nice thought but at 4-2, it is still a little early. Let's wait and see where the VAgiants end up with Coughlin, Marvin Lewis in Cincy and Mike Nolan in SF (kidding).

It is next to impossible to pick the coach of the year this early. Its not even the half way mark. However im going to thow in my 2 cents and say wich ever team out of the NFC east makes the playoffs will make there coach the coach of the year....so yea Gibbs

Gibbs as coach of the year, Brunell-comeback player, Moss-MVP, that would be great. But let me just throw this out there-if the Colts actually finish undefeated doesn't it have to go to Dungy? I know it's a long way to go before the Colts finish undefeated I'm just sayin is all

Joe Gibbs is coach of MY year so far, but I think it's a little premature to make this call. Wk8 is Sunday and theres 9 more after that. Anything could happen. Tice could be named Coach of the Year by year's end. I doubt it but at this point anything is possible.

Re: Gibbs coach of the year?

Coach of the Year typically (though not always) goes to a team who exceeded expectations like nobody's business. I think the Bengals were expected to go far this year, and while Marvin Lewis has done a good job, it's not like he had garbage to work with.

I think we all here at the Warpath had high expectations for the Redskins, calling for them to go 10-6 and such. But nationally the Skins were expected to suck again. NOBODY thought they would do anything. That's why, if they make the playoffs, Gibbs has to get the nod.

If the Giants win the NFC East you would have to consider Coughlin.

That's a good point about Dungy. However, me being the homer that I am, what has to be considered is how Gibbs has turned this team around in a short amount of time AND has adjusted himself back into NFL coaching in one year's time. It is still too early to say, but if we win these next two games, I think it becomes reality, because I don't see us having anything less than a 10 - 6 season if we're success tomorrow and next week.
