Holding Penalty (in general)

Am I alone in thinking that 10 yards is a bit stiff for holding? This is a penelty that can be called in every single play of professional football and it sets you back 10 yards. In my opinion this is a 5 yarder.

Just when I thought I'd seen it all, now a complaint about how much a holding penalty costs a team. Amazing.

I am with you on this one, A stupid holding call can change the whole flow of the game, as it did yesterday. Five yards would be a much better suited penalty for a hold. And the holding calls are so subjective, there is no doubt that Rabach held (what a moron) but also on the last play of the game, our best defensive player was blatantly held (taylor) it wasnt a one or two second hold, he was held until LT was at the 20 yd line, go back and check it out, the ref was looking right at him but chose not to make the call. It just seems to me that the skins get these calls at the most in opportune time, its either bad coaching, or those evil refs really do have it out for us.

Irish - this has nothing to do with the Rabach thing. It's a step in moving past the Chargers loss. I've been thinking about this for weeks. I simply think for a call that's as common as holding ten yards is pretty stiff.

Re: Holding Penelty (in general)

If it was only five I think you would see more players holding than given up a sack. Most sacks are over a five yard loss but less than ten most of the time. This would give a lineman a reason to hold and take a five yard penalty than to not hold and give up an 8 yard sack. Ten yards is the correct amount.

Irish - I am with you. Skins fans will find something to bitch about the next day after a loss. Instead of the true statement that should accompany most post. "we lost, straight up, we lost" no fantam call, no fumble, no ref cost us the game, or a holding penalty being to harsh of a distance call, just say it " WE LOST"

Good point, Im still not thinking clearly. Just wished things would have turned out differently, trying to justify another loss in my own mind. Point well taken

56fanatic, I think Daseal was just trying to point out that the 10 yds for holding was a little bit of a stiff penalty. He's not making any excuses.

I think that statement pretty much says Im trying to move past it and that we lost.

As far as the sack, that's very true, but if the ball is in a RB's hands should the call be different than in passing situations?

Re: Holding Penelty (in general)

Unless we can get Hall out there for another try from 5 yards closer I don't see what good changing the penalty rule is going to do.

I agree holding should be 10 yards....5 yards would put it on par with off sides and false start and it should be a bigger penalty than those. If anything the officials should call it less since it happens on every play...but that is not to say they were not justified in calling Rabach for his blatent game costing hold.

Re: Holding Penalty (in general)

Actually I agree. Its a penalty that happens all the time, much like a false start. I think if an illegal contact is a 5 yard penalty, then holding would be more in the 5 yard area. I mean whatever, its been like that forever and I dont expect it to change. This really has nothing with yesterdays loss, i've thought it for a long time, but whatever.

Re: Holding Penalty (in general)

I think that we should have picked up 5 yards after that play happened. How freaking hard is it to get a few yards?

Re: Holding Penalty (in general)

10 yards has always seemed a bit harsh to me as well, but as someone already said I think the rule is in place because 5 yards probably wouldn't be enough to discourage holding.
