Randle El Signing Shows Why Skins Can't Compete

Signing Randle El to that ridiculous #1 WR contract is another in a long string of high-priced flops that characterizes the Snyder era. Like so many of these signings, most people knew the day the deal was ANNOUNCED that it was a terrible move. This is the biggest and most obvious disaster since Snyder signed Deion Sanders a year after it was obvious that Sanders had plummeted as a player.

There was and is no way Randle El could ever have lived up to that contract. That's $8M on signing bonus and $27M of salary cap money that could have brought in a gaggle of decent to superior players. As bad as Brunell may have been, who was he going to throw to? Santana Moss has been a non-factor most of the year, Randle El is largely useless as a wideout, which leaves Brandon Lloyd. Even the Eagles acquisition of Stallworth makes the Redskins look dumb in comparison, as he's better than BOTH Randle and Lloyd.

I don't care who your QB, or your coach, or anyone is. You aren't going to have success if you don't draft or bring in quality players who meet or exceed their pay scale.

And this is hardly an isolated incident. The incompetance is ongoing. Anyone think that TJ Duckett deal made any sense at all? The guys gone in another month, and so is our 3rd round pick.

Welcome to the board!

Sorry to have to disagree with your first post, but I love the guy. ARE and Carter are the two free agents we signed this past offseason who I cannot complain about.

Randle El is a much needed playmake, who would you rather have returning punts in this league??? and don't tell me that isnt important, plus he can catch the ball. It's no his fault that all we do is run the ball.

Totally, they will be fine.
On another note, we are pioneering another type of fan. We seem to be collecting a large number of NEW bashers. Not your routine sort of Bandwagon Fare, but interesting. Only in Skins land

My freinds that are Steelers fans laughed when the Skins signed ARE to that outrageous contract. Thats a lot of $ for a punt returner and a trick play specialist. I think the Skins would have done better signing Jurevicious but he's not flashy enough for this organization.

Re: Randle El Signing Shows Why Skins Can't Compete

I like lloyd and ARE. Like the post above its not their fault we can't get the ball to them. And yes we over paid for them.

The bigger question here is why get these guys if we are going to play "redskins" football. You have all this talent and used money that you are not going to see play. If we are going to play "redskins" running the ball football why not sign a stud o-lineman instead of signing 2 wr's.

I'm not saying we shouldn't run the ball but our FO has to make up their mind and build our team around it.

BTW...Lloyd can block. Has anyone else noticed this?

No, he's just old (32). Don't get me wrong, he's a very good wideout, but I'm glad we didn't sign him.

Re: Randle El Signing Shows Why Skins Can't Compete

Randle El was a poor signing, we signed him not to be a reciever, but to be a punt returner and a gimmick man. So far he has negative rushing yards this season, and has yet to complete a pass. Not to mention that (with the exception of his td where he just ran straight) even his big returns are only for about 10 yards. 30 mil for a good punt returner who doesnt return kickoffs or contribute in any other way to special teams, yea thats a great signing. Dont get me wrong I dont think he is a bad player, he returns the ball well and is a mediocre reciever, I just think that his role deserves to have about a 7 million dollar contract over 3 years, because we can sign way more players that we need.

Good point, small fast receiver dont cator to "REDSKIN FOOTBALL" in any way, shape or form. Duckett cators to redskin football, but he doesnt get the ball haha

Re: Randle El Signing Shows Why Skins Can't Compete

Brian Mitchell would be your best chance to argue for Randle El. Brian Mitchell was an outstanding return guy and 3rd down back who seemed to be that extra wrinkle that made the Skins so dominant in 1991. I haven't looked up the stats, but is Randle El even a middle-of-the-pack return guy? He seems subpar at best. Mitchell was a rare player who seemed to have no specific role but made huge contributions to the Redskins over the years. I'm not sure even HE would warrant such outstanding compensation, though.

And many of you are just too willing to look past what the Redskins got for what the Redskins paid. For $5M bonus and $16M? Ok, maybe. But Randle El got paid #1 WR money. Look down the list of the top 30 NFL receivers and tell me you will ever find his name on it? Randle El is the wideout equivalent to the former Rams Az Hakim, not Torry Holt.

Do the smurfs ring a bell at all, or the Posse?

Outside of Monk Gibbs always favored the small and quicker WRs.

Excellent point about signing 2 WRs and then ignoring the O-Line. One of the great contants of Gibbs 1.0 was superior O-line play. Yesterday, the O-line blocked beautifully for Betts, but the blitz pickups (or lack thereof) cost the team a chance to win the game. I love ARE's game - I wish we'd try to get him the ball in space downfield instead of repeatedly running reverses.

those same guys are sure as hell wishing they had him back. the steelers are greatly missing Randle El this year - big time! That guy does a lot that doesn't show up in the stat books. He is a bonafide game-changer. Although we may have over-paid a bit, I think it was a great signing. The bad decision, no horrible decision, was to sign brandon lloyd right after the ARE signing. Now, that was stupid!
