But Pierce became a free agent two years ago and left for the New York Giants in part, some around the team believe, because Williams thought he was expendable. One coach with knowledge of the situation who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution said he doesn't believe Williams told Redskins owner Daniel Snyder that Pierce was irreplaceable. Had he done so, the coach said, Snyder probably would have matched the Giants' offer.
Blame GW for our defense sucking.

I think its interesting that Canfora did NOT write the Gregg Williams article. He has been pretty critical of GW, I wonder if he can't get the interview.

I don't think it's a big issue. JLC only wrote first of this series of article, Howard Bryant wrote the second. So it seems like they all split head writing responsibilities on this project.

I am lost. All of these articles have my head swimming. I can't decide what the hell is wrong. I am left wondering if every team in this league has basically similar issues?

I would guess so. We are talking about people here and people are all the same. Not that every person is the same but a group of people is going to be made up of parts similar to the parts of another likesize group usually. So interpersonal relationships and management issues like this can't be unique to the Skins.

Again I am lost.

Re: Gregg Williams Here We Go Again.

I've been ragging on our D constantly this season. This article actually made me feel a little better about the situation. I like GW a lot. I think he can turn it around. He's been phenomenal in 2 out of his 3 seasons. But ditch the cover 2....

On a side note, I read the article on Saunders yesterday and this article on GW today, and something is bothering me. Why are the Skins players and assistants, on conditions of anonymity, airing our dirty laundry in the media? That's typically not like a Gibbs team. I don't like it. It was more evident in the Saunders article, then I heard Portis today on the John Thompson show. Why are we running our mouths all of a sudden??

I thought it was a pretty sympathetic article, all things considered. Sounds like maybe this guy has gotten burned by the media on more than one occasion.

When the building is burning down do you tell everyone or just close your eyes and hope that it goes away?

do we have any of that magic left? why not have these guys start acting like professionals? say the same old clichés that everyone else uses, and don't rock the boat

Re: Gregg Williams Here We Go Again.

Another good article. It helps shed some light on Gregg Williams the man. I like his take that you don't go from being right to being wrong and you don't go from being a good coach to not knowing anything.

I think with personnel he's made some poor decisions and because he had so much success in 2004 with a bunch of no-names he probably got a little full of himself and his scheme. 2006 was a wake up call for everyone.

Re: Gregg Williams Here We Go Again.

This seemed like they didn't have enough material for 5 pages, so they made it all novel-like - almost as though a fiction writer would introduce the protagonist in a book.

The insights into Gregg's personality were all great, but I hope there's a follow up piece with specifics on what went wrong defensively. These references to "a lack of talent" and "Saunders' offense getting off the field too quickly" seem like lame excuses.

Exactly right. You don't suddenly forget how to coach football, just as guys like Marcus Washington didn't suddenly forget how to play football.

We definitely have a fractured locker room right now, which Grilliams may have contributed to, and it's a big problem. But he can still scheme and coach with the best of them. What will make or break him will be his ability to get the players to buy in again.

With such a divide in the locker room, I think the team needs some of the players to step up and be leaders, bring them all together. The team's players like Portis, Jansen, Sellers, and Marcus Washington need to step up and support the coaches, and lead the rest of the team to buy back in.

Canfora was on either Brian Mitchell's radio show or Czaban's Yesterday, I can't remember which one, but he said that the recent articles had kinda been group projects. And when he spoke about the article that he wrote he said that Bryant and Carpenter deserved just as much credit at as him. So, I'm guessing that they all kinda did research together, tossed around ideas together, and helped each other out.

Re: Gregg Williams Here We Go Again.

A lack of talent I'll buy, it's clear we need some major upgrades, but the offense getting off the field too quick I don't.

Maybe early in the season, but later on when we were really pounding the rock the main problem offensively was the inability to punch it in.
